View Full Version : Good noob 'friendly' (sci-fi) art sites?

For a long time I put up drawings of starships I created on the subspace comm network, a now dead forum. Now, I know it isn't really 'art' to do technical drawings, but I was wondering if anyone knew of some websites that could give constructive feedback. Now I don't want a 'everything's great' place where people give pats on the back to everyone, but one that encourages constructive criticism. Most of my stuff is done on MS Paint (I know, learn something new), and is of starships, sci-fi and fantasy weaponry, and actual designs for aircraft (small sports mostly).
Basically my stuff ranges from this. http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/2244/langley04post.th.jpg (http://img25.imageshack.us/my.php?image=langley04post.jpg)
Where do I belong?

Try http://www.3dscifi.com we have a 2d forum as well as 3d.
Someone is likely to try making a 3d model of that first image though, it's good stuff.

Thanks. I'll try that out. I'm alright with modelers taking my stuff and making it 3d, it happened on the old board. I need a new desktop background anyway. :p

Do you do models of big mecha by any chance?

I've drawn a few by hand before, but never modeled them.
I've never done the little plastic models of mechs either.

Whoops. I meant to ask if you've done diagrams of big mecha in the same style as you do your starships and planes.

I have, but only in a drawing notebook years ago. They were for a fan fiction* that I was writing for an anime called Dual: Parallel Trouble Adventure.
They are fairly bad, but not terrible considering I'm so inept a human form drawing and these were human like mecha.
*Yes, I know that drawing starships and writing fan fiction makes very, very geeky but I swear it's the only one I've done so far. :p

You might like the Concept Art forums:
http://conceptart.org/forums/
Particularly the "finally finished" section, where pros who work in video games and movies post their work. There are also sub-forums featuring work from amateurs and beginners, including critique centers. Your style is a little different than what you'll find there (it tends to run more towards loose, "artsy" stuff rather than technical drawings), but you might find some people who are interested in looking at your stuff and giving some feedback. You'll also likely find a lot of nice inspiration there, too.

Hmmmm. This makes me want to send you my outline for a big mecha table top game I've been working on for some time. It's supposed to be a hard sci-fi big mecha setting. No FTL, no telepathy, or other nonsense.

Thanks for the link Blackwell.
Go ahead and send me the outline ImaginalDisc. I'm willing to try my hand at mech on my computer.

Let me spend a few days making it comprehensible, and I'll do that.

Freelance semi-pro cow orker of mine suggested:
http://www.cgsociety.org/
http://www.conceptart.org/
He warned that they have both sci-fi and fantasy on there, so it's easy to get lost in the noise. But those sites are two that he's aware of.
ETA: Blah! Blackwell beat me to the ConceptArt one a few days ago. Shoulda read the thread first.
