I don't think this is even negotiable: The Ugliest Production Car Ever is undoubtedly the Aztek.

http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/aztek.jpg

It has the ugliest car-butt of all time, unless you count those modified by collision.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_en_CTSne0G0/SYOn5Qvy46I/AAAAAAAAAKk/IW97Wvemg7U/s400/aztek.jpg

A regular visitor to one of my neighbors drives one of these, and every month or so when it's parked on the street, my daughter says, "What a silly car, Mommy!" and laughs. Even at nine, she has an eye for design...

Fixed that for you.

My vote?

Either:
The Citroen 2CV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citro%C3%ABn_2CV) (so ugly that children who see it scream in terror and will not be consoled),
Or the first-gen Fiat Multipla (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat_Multipla) (it looks as though it's been horribly disfigured by a particularly unpleasant disease).

Honourable mention goes to the Chevrolet SSR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_SSR) (it's retro gone disastrously, catastrophically wrong)..

Fiat Multipla is a good candidate. You're dead wrong on the 2 CV, though. If there was an adjective for "so ugly it's adorable", they'd have a picture of a 2 CV next to it in the dictionary.

I thought that was the coolest-looking car ever when I was a young teenager. I built a plastic model of it. I had posters of it hanging on my wall.

20+ years later I have to say it's one of the most ridiculous-looking, over-styled cars ever.

As for my vote...I was going to say Pacer or Aztek but I just clicked on X's link for the Mulitipla and may have to reconsider my decision.

I agree on both counts. The Multipla looks like a maladjusted cartoon car. What is that bit below the windscreen all about, anyway?

As to the "Deux Cheveux" the picture doesn't do it justice. I've never seen one with a factory sheen on the paint job. The all went matte-finish the minute you signed the papers to drive it out of the show room. They look sort of like a WWI tank turned into a car. So far beyond ugly that they're adorable. And those little Briggs & Stratton lawn more engines! You could count the cylinders popping.

At some point in the 1980s, it seemed like cars just had to have straight surfaces and lines. Just compare e.g. a 1980s Volvo 700 series (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/09/91744ti.jpg) to its current equivalent (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/35/2007_Volvo_S80.jpg). The Countach was just a child of its time -- a time when IMO car design was stylistically at its low point.

GM's got an odd habit of this. In second place, because it undoubtedly is not uglier than the Aztek, is the Chevy Avalanche.

Little wonder it's named after a natural disaster, no? :boggled: Anyway, while it's utterly normal looking next to that monstrosity Pontiac put on the road, it's still *****' ugly. Newer models, oddly enough, are less painful; they now more resemble standard pickup trucks with some weirdness on the box. And thank goodness for that, because the old circa '02 versions should be upheld as examples of what not to design.

That's always been my #1 ugliest car, but I can never remember the name of the damn thing in order to search for it when this subject comes up (thank you for finding it for me!). Even the name is so ugly it's simultaneously ridiculous and unmemorable!

Ove, I would agree with you re: the Hummer, but there is one example of a military-cum-consumer vehicle that's been, oh, somewhat successful. They call it Jeep.

Hummer H2... it's oddly popular among sports stars and some celebrities here in the States.

And for the life of me, I can't see why. It's basically an ugly body on top of a quarter-ton truck frame. People could get a GM Yukon or Chevy Tahoe for cheaper, get the same mechanical parts, and avoid having a butt-ugly body to embarass themselves with in the parking lot.

For some reason I had it in my head that the Gremlin was a Ford Product.

I cut the Aztec some slack, because the back end was designed that way for a functional reason, not just a whim of asthetics. I'll give them credit for trying to take function over form in this case.

I like ugly cars becuase it means designers are trying.
If I see a scion in a lot, I know what it is instantly.

If I see a standard mass produced car, I'd be at a loss to tell you which it is until a read the trunk label.

This goes for most cars; accord, civic, camary, g6, Mazda 3, acura, focus, lacrosse, cobalt, malibu, *yawn*....

I've always thought that the Aztec and some other trucks are given too hard a time. I mean, trucks don't have the same styling as cars.

The Element however just sucks. Test drove one once. Ugly, crappy, induces motion sickness even in people like me who don't often get motion sick, and not as useful as a 'function over form' vehicle should be.

Some Japanese cars are so ugly they are cute. Just because I want some funny google searches, look for the 'Do It' and the 'Naked'.

There isn't anything particularly unique about the Aztek to be good OR bad. It's just another SUV, recognizable within the group but not very deviant from it. The constant bandwagon-jumping about it is an interesting psychological phenomenon: what could cause so many people to be so emphatic and uniform about an issue that's just not even there?

I think it's a highly useful vehicle. At a small cost to society, you have a bloated, overpriced substitute for a small penis for every guy who ever got turned down to the Homecoming Dance by the head cheerleader in high school, and who has never gotten over it. You automatically know who's so lacking in social skills and confidence that they have to bolster their manhood by buying a pseudo-militaristic plastic and tinfoil dildo, tarted up to resemble something that might challenge a T-72 in the middle of the Arabian Peninsula. It's the automotive version of Chuck Norris, only nowhere near as self-righteous.

I think I've told this story about my Aztek before but...

During the Summer of the Shark my dad was dying of cancer and my hand-me-down 1991 Jetta was on its last wheels. I knew I'd be getting some money from my dad after he passed and was working a lot of overtime so I could put a huge downpayment (it wound up being $9000) so my monthlies wouldn't be too bad. Aztek's weren't selling real well and the Pontiac place near me was marking them down. I saw in an ad that they were offering a free camping kit with purchase and driving home from work and listening to the various noises the Jetta was making decied after 10+ years to finally buy a new car.

That was Aug. 20th 2001.

About 20 days later 9/11 happened and about 20 more days later on Oct. 2nd my dad passed away.

I hadn't received my camping kit at the time of purchase so I contacted Pontiac some time between purchase and 9/11. My reply came back in the week following the attacks saying they'd take care of it. I responded that it didn't seem like that big a deal any more, but it arrived in the mail a few weeks later. I still have yet to take it out of the box.

Epilogue:

Tonight, on the way into work, at 10:15 on Independance Ave. in Richarson, TX, I hit 40,000 miles.

Enjoy. :p

I was going to come up with a clever answer to ElMondoHummus telling how i knew why people bought the monsters but you have just said it all. :D
AND the fact that a pumped-up ex bodybuilder/actor turned politician drives in one doesn't make the car less silly.

Weren't the full framed Imps D bodies?

Chrysler had some wacky styling in the early sixties, but made up for it in the mid to late sixties.

Oops - you're right. All the big Chryslers then were C bodies but for the Imperial, a D body.

Yeah they were a hoot to drive. You just had to remember to redline the motor constantly. Do that and you actually got some acceleration.

I even managed once to blow a BMW off at a set of lights. The road merged 50 feet further on so he had no chance to wind his car up. Boy was he upset

Around here the big deal is to take a nice, utilitarian truck and jack the damn thing eight feet into the air so that it looks like it's going to roll over just sitting still on a level surface if a breeze comes along.

Yeah, but the 2.0 litre Lancia engine fitted in there nicely. You had to upgrade a lot of other stuff as well, but it turned it into a sporty little number. There's an sorry-looking X1/9 sitting around the corner from here looking for a home and I'm half tempted to buy it and do the full rebuild job.

I used to have a green Mustang II, a '74. We called it "Kermit the Ford."

My dad had the only vehicle that deserved the name "Frogeye," a very old Austin Healy Sprite. He had it until '69, when he sold it to a friend.

I would love to find one of those and restore it. Paint it maroon, like my Dad's. I walked into my old favorite Chrysler dealer a few years ago, and there was a Prowler sitting there. There being no customers inside at the time, I burst out laughing. Not truly ugly (like the Anglia), but my first non-north american car that I bought in 1973.

I loved this thing even if it never did start after November or before May in Ontario or even after a summer rainstorm. I learned quickly to park it where it can be rolled to bump-start the thing. It didn't even have proper windshield defrosters on it.

Mine had a hard top though, but it was the same colour as this one! Oh and it was the NA model with left-hand drive of course.

A pretty good compendium of ugliness can be found here, in The Ugliest Cars in Britain (http://www.uglycars.co.uk/index.html), which also includes a page for cars not seen in Britain.

One not there, which I think ought to be, is the Czech Tatra. a nice example of which can be found here: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/01/Tatra_603.jpg

A personal favorite for the list is the late 90's "third generation" Ford Taurus station wagon. The stylists of this monstrosity took a fairly pleasing conventional body, and then systematically changed all its contours and all its seam lines and shapes with an obvious intention of making all of them mismatched and disharmonious. I would put this down to accident, except that it is so totally consistent. Look at a normal car, and see how the shape of a window follows, more or less, the shape of the roof that surrounds it, and how the seam where a door or hatch joins the body follows, more or less, the contours of the body itself. Now look at a Taurus. No two lines run parallel, no two shapes are in accord. If the roof is rectangular, the window is oval, if the body goes one way, the door lines go another, etc. It is a parody of design, purposely and pretty obviously intentionally perverse.

A very recent addition to my list is the Subaru B9 Tribeca, stiff competition for the Pontiac Aztek in the godawful SUV category.

This isn't a Clarkson wannabe is it - curious anti-French undertones, overtones and middletones :)

The Hummer thing - that is pig ugly - brick on wheels.

Actually, I don't think it was ugly, but it was a piece of :rule10. I had one and it broke a rod before it hit 20,000 miles. And oddly enough, that model year just happened to be the one that didn't have the 5-year, 50,000-mile warranty on it.

Looked cute with the sun roof open, though. :(
.
It's been 3 years after my extended warranty ran out.
I have by actual count gotten 720 "final second notices" on re-instating it.
You may still have a chance! :)

I do now:
My own ugliest production vehicle ever: her beautiful face, her profile, and her nice new master cylinder with adjustable proportioning valve (yeah, there is a LOT of engine compartment work to be done). You can see the shiny new front disc hub poking through the wheel in the profile shot. Front disc brakes will be the only thing not original when I'm done.

I think that the Chrysler designs of the first half of the 1960s may well be the most consistently ugly ever, as a group. Your post reminds me that I once, as part of a job, was saddled with the driving and maintenance of a horrifically rusty 1960 Valiant station wagon with a pushbutton automatic transmission. That particular one had a bad vacuum modulator, so it took about ten seconds to engage from a standstill, and also had a missing (yes, MISSING) upper ball joint, which gave its handling a very unusual characteristic, since one wheel had a huge negative camber. The top of the spindle simply rested in the hole left in the a-arm when the ball joint fell out from rust. It also caught fire once, but that's trivial. I had a Pontiac some years later that caught fire three times.

My grandfather had a 1961 Chrysler, and riding in it one had continually to rein back the panic of thinking that another car was passing at a dangerous distance. It wasn't another car. It was its own tailfins!

Here is a page devoted to those Chryslers. Note the Valiant wagon, Who thinks of these things?

Ahhh.. see, to me that site is nothing but beauty. Almost - the '60 Valiant sedan was a bit much.

And what quality construction! How many other cars do you know that can even move absent a ball joint?

Your post was (unsurprisingly!) reported a couple of times. You'd already removed the image link and I'm sure it was completely unintentional so no further action is required. Unfortunately this is not the first time this has happened and it is the main reason we have "no hot-linking" in Rule 4. Please always ensure that a site explicitly allows hot-linking before you hot-link to it, otherwise what is explicit may not just be the permission!

I don't think a warning is even necessary here. Lesson learned. Mistakes have been made in the past, they'll be made in the future.

Kind of funny, though, when you think about it. It certainly could pass as an editorial comment on the quality of the Messerschmitt.

Yes, a valuable lesson learned. While investigating what exactly happened, I discovered the only thing uglier than the cars the people at The Institute for Historical Review drive, is there sense of humour and their views on the Holocaust.

After watching the clip, I agree that the "car" is pretty interesting and kinda cute as well given the fact that you can drive through a building and actually use an elevator while sitting in it.

My son tried to sit in one, once. At 6'4", he would have needed a can opener for daily use.

Of course, it's understandable that in Ireland, a Yaris makes you a rotten driver. For one thing, you people insist on driving on the wrong side of the road... :p

The older model, definitely. The current one... well, I'm 6'3", and I use my wife's new-model Yaris regularly. It's not an ideal fit, but it's not painful either, even when we drive the 160 miles or so to see the Mother-in-law. Mind you, this one has a clutchless semi-automatic transmission -- driving the regular manual would be a problem since there would be no obvious place for my left foot & leg.

This may not be the ugliest, but it is to me. It's a 1962 Pontiac Tempest LeMans, the car I learned how to drive in. In an era when all the cool kids were tooling around in SS Chevelles, Hemi Cudas, Boss Mustangs and (gawd) customized vans, yours truly was stuck driving that. Not only was it Grade A girl repellant, the damn thing was a menace for an inexperienced driver. A somewhat robust engine combined with a completely inadequate suspension was a nearly fatal combination for me on a number of occasions. Rainy days were dreaded as the slightest error could result in a spinout. Oh well, personal bias aside, the car did make me a better driver. This car is the assembly line cousin of the Chevy Corvair, IIRC, one of the subjects of Raplh Nader's infamous book Unsafe At Any Speed.

It's so alien to me to drive on the right hand side. I nearly had a panic attack driving in France.

:D I nearly crashed my car (well, a rental van) while on holiday in England. I drove on the middle lane of the M4, and wanted to overtake the car in front of me. At first, I consciously looked in the right mirror to see if I could overtake, but when I wanted to make the manoeuver, automatism kicked in and I steered to the left. There was already a car there :o. I did avoid a collision, fortunately, and after some swerving got the van back on track.

Another time, when looking for a camping, I got on a small, quiet road without markings, which turned out to be the wrong road. On returning by the same road, I only realized after some time after the markings re-appeared that I was driving on the right (eh, the wrong) side of the road.

It's really difficult not to let the automatisms you acquire kick in.

I have found a challenger to the Multipla!

Rest assured I didn't go out of my way to find it. I just perused a magazine, and found a picture of it staring at me. The article wasn't about it, but rather about that which the car is named for. The Stelvio Pass.

Even more appalling? The price. 18,000,000 yen when new.
Which works out to about $164,000 CDN (http://www.oanda.com/convert/fxhistory) (in 1989), or approximately $255,000 CDN (http://www.bankofcanada.ca/en/rates/inflation_calc.html) today ($209,000 US). Over a quarter-million dollars, for that hideous blight.
