View Full Version : Italian group backs Iraq fighters

From the BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3277029.stm)
A group of Italian anti-war militants is raising funds to support the armed Iraqi resistance, the BBC has learned.

The discovery comes as Italy mourns 19 men killed in a suicide attack in Iraq last week.

The "Antiimperialista" organisation's internet campaign asks people to send "10 Euros to the Iraqi resistance".

They say they have collected 12,000 euros ($14,165) in the past eight weeks and admit the money used could be used to buy weapons.
Well, that'll help matters.

The Antiimperialistas are a group of European anti-war and anti-globalisation supporters.

They are currently organising an anti-war demonstration in Italy next month, and it remains to be seen whether news of the fund-raising activities will deter more moderate anti-war activists from attending.

What a bunch of hypocrites. This confirms a long heald suspicion of mine. Some "anti-war" groups arent so much anti-war as they are anti-west, anti-freedom and anti-progress.

Sounds like soon Bush will be putting pressure on allies to round up more of their
own people. Stick em in a camp! If they aren't with us, they're against us.

Well, some anti-war groups, anyway.

Clearly this group has chosen a side.

anti-war militants

Anti-war militant is a contradiction in terms. It's amazing the lengths that the BBC will go to to avoid giving them an appropriate name.

Do you think 'anti-war militants' is an appropriate name, or do you think the BBC should describe them some other way?

I've never heard a media organization call anyone a 'pro-war pacifist', have you?

I think we're all missing the big picture here... this is, in fact, excellent news for the US and allied forces.

I mean, after all, when have the Italians ever backed the winning side?

(yes, yes, I know Berlusconi is with us, but the irony was too much to pass up.)

Makes as much sense as "environmentalists" who set fires to car dealerships, releasing a hundred times more toxins into the ecosystem as the vehicles involved would ever produce during their lifespan.

I don't know if it's hypocrisy or just blinding stupidity.

;)

(an excellent joke Jocko, I wish I had thought of it!)

I think that's the point...it was a demonstration of absurdity form TMY.

Anti-this war rather than war in general, perhaps?

I don't agree with what this group is doing either, but I hope the forumites who are attacking them will also condemn Reagan's backing of the Muja-Hadin in Afghanistan and the contra terrorists in Nicaragua.

Clearly not. They are actively supporting one side in this war.

Or to put it another way, anti-the hostile invasion of Iraq.

If the group has made it clear they're going to give the money to armed groups and not humanitarian aid organizations, I think they are now legitimate targets themselves.

It's not just a suspicion, it is true. However, not the word "some". Not all anti-war groups are like this by any means.
