The unemployment number reported is actually larger than it REALLY is because there is a stigma associated with claiming that you aren't looking for work and are instead sitting back and enjoying your big benefits check.

So the percentage of people unemployed and looking for a job is probably more like 6 or 7%, not because utter doom has come upon us and no one can find a job but because people are on vacation with their unemployment check.

"Powerdown", as I already explained, is something that Transition Towns is focussing on. It is not a synonym for "apocalypse or "catastrophe" and can't simply be tied to Jared Diamond and then used to beat me over the head!

Transition Towns acknowledges that there will be less energy available in the future and that we need to prepare for that future now in order to make the transition to a lower energy world less traumatic. Developing "better crops and better harvesting techniques" can be seen in a similar light.
