What's even scarier is that 2012 will also have three Friday the thirteenths.

A bar-trick that I've developed is the ability to tell someone the day of the week for any date, so I'll use that skill to help with this.

You'd expect, if the months were simply random, that 16% of the years would have three F13's. That's the binomial distribution you'd use to figure that.

However, they're not random; they're a repeating pattern. In non-leap years, Feb, Mar, and Nov will all have their day numbers be on the same weekdays. So 1/7 of all non-leap years will have three F13's.

Also, for leap years, Jan, Apr, and Jul will have the same day/date patterns, therefore 1/7 of leap years will have three F13's.

Altogether, that comes out to 1/7 of the years will, or 14%. Since I was born 47 years ago, the years were 1970, 1981, 1984, 1987, 1992, 1998, and 2009. That's 7 out of 47, pretty close to the 1/7 ration.

Yeah, isn't it great!!!
I get paid on the 15th of the month, or the earliest working day before that if the 15th falls on a Saturday or Sunday, so I'll get paid two days early on three months this year.
Hooray for Friday the 13th!
