Science or science fiction?

From Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tummo#Scientific_investigation):

An attempt to study the physiological effects of Tummo has been made by Benson and colleagues (Benson et al., 1982; Cromie, 2002) who studied Indo-Tibetan Yogis in the Himalayas and in India in the 1980s. In the first experiment, in Upper Dharamsala (India), Benson et al. (1982) found that these subjects exhibited the capacity to increase the temperature of their fingers and toes by as much as 8.3°C.

Sounds hard to believe. Is Tummo the real deal? This sounds supernatural to me.

Is Tummo the real deal?

The psychic heat Drod is produced by the space particles and the heat manifested from the friction of the wind element.

Yep, it's real.

Hell, it's in Wiki and mentions "an attempt to measure it scientifically" and notes a change in finger temperature of 8.3o C, so it must be true!

The fact that I could probably change mine by over 10 degrees by putting it in an ice bath probably doesn't even count. Trying out taking your temperature before and after a stringent workout may be worth your while.

Yet another example of yogic parababble.

As a kid I could get goose pimples on my arms just by thinking about it (sometimes). I had to be in a cool environment, but not actually cold. I just imagined feeling cold and there would be a point where the autonomic reflex kicked in. I'm sure someone who systematically practised this would get very good at it. I've never thought to check temperature, but if we learn to consciously trigger part of the autonomic response to cold system, I would not be surprised to find we also reduce peripheral blood flow.

I daresay there are biofeedback gadgets to help learn this response.

My dad can make one hand heat up and the other stay cool just by thinking about it.

I can cause certain parts of my body to expand in volume considerably just by thinking certain thoughts.....

Someone get these people into a plethysmograph...

Would not only half the population qualify for this? Is there an equivalent for the other sex? (Note: I will not be Googling for this). ;)

It does sound hard to believe.

The quote says temperature of their hands... do they mean the skin temperature? That could just be constricting circulation in a cold room. A tennis ball in the armpit will work.

Lowering the actual tissue temperature by 8C would damage the tissue somewhat, depending on duration. I don't know why anybody would do it on purpose.

I thought Tummo was the lost Marx Brother?

The Irishman rubbed a magic lamp he'd brought into the bar and a jini appeared and granted him three wishes. The Irishman wished for a bottle of beer that would never run dry. A bottle appeared on the bar and just as the Irishman drained it the bottle refilled. The jin asked what his next two wishes would be. The Irishman replied, " I'll have Tummo just like that one."

Some Skoal or strong detergent like Tide under an armpit will raise your temperature on the sly. I've not measured how much though.

Really? That's kind of cool.
