About ten years ago I won a subscription to three magazines. I chose Time, Mechanics Illustrated and not knowing what I was doing Fate Magazine. Fate magazine is about ghosts, ghoulies, bigfoot and The Devils Triangle etc. When I opened the magazine for the first ime I saw my mistake and vowed never to open one again. What to do with the magazines? I was going to get them for three years so I had to think of something. There was a girl who had just gotten out of college. She had a degree in accounting and had never made a grade in college below an A. I knew that she read the astrology column in the newspaper so I half jokingly asked her if she would be interested in the woo woo Publication. She said yes.

Ok this educated, intelligent, beautiful girl in her early twentys seemed mesmerized by this piece of garbage. She waited on pins and needles waiting for the next issue. This went on for three years and when my subscription ran out she subscribed to it herself for three more years. Why would an intelligent, educated person like her be so enthralled by this crap? She thanked me profusely for giving her the magazine despite my protestations as to what nonsense it represented. Why? Tell me why?

Same reason all my buddies in grad school and I bought the Weekly World News on roadtrips.
Same reason I still watch all sorts of goofball shows and movies about woo stuff.
It's fun escapism.

Maybe instead of Fate, you should've chosen Mad Magazine.

With a name like Fate, what did you expect the magazine to be?

Why? Tell me why?

I guess it was just meant to be.

I thought it was a collection of supernatural fiction stories by talented writers.

Well, in one sense it kind of is; it's just the type of fiction that people believe in is all.

No. That's Time.

Is there another god story in the works, I wonder. ;)

I thought it was a collection of supernatural fiction stories by talented painfully sub-par writers.

right you are!

I had a subscription to Fate back in the 70's. Or was it Fingers of Fate? Anyway, sounds like the same magazine. Lots of ancedotes with no references or anything. Even that young I can remember thinking "where did that happen? I'd like to verify it." Some of the smaller articles didn't even have names or authors.

Here's a classic FATE cover featuring the art of R. Crumb:

My mother gets Fate, I remember that issue. Also I remember the issue after that with a bunch of Fate readers writing in and hating that particular cover.

I once had an article REJECTED by the editor of Fate. It was all about the Monastary Of The Seven Flavors...and a specific strain of bacteria that lived in Yogurt that was exhibiting signs of intelligence and a modicum of dominance.

Perfectly in keeping with their usual content I thought.
