View Full Version : Best Forum to discuss Politics?

If I had a list, I'd make this a poll. Since I don't, I'll just toss this out to see what comes up. I am curious as to what forums (like this one) people think are the best and why. In particular, do you think having a "good" discussion on any of the forums will be picked up by (semi-) mainstream media and, thus, potentially influence the real political situation?

I don't think I've ever seen a forum post quoted in a news article, but if that's your goal then I'd look for forums hosted by news organizations.
MSN has some forums that fit this description. They have some forums linked to their news sites and their moderators are columnists. I'm a pretty heavy user of some of their financial and credit related forums, though I've been inactive recently.

I believe I remember hearing (note: annecdotal) that Slashdot had affected some technology news in the early days and that a Slashdot joke had been picked up as real news. I believe the mainstream has since learned it's lesson, but I thought that promoting an active forum (like JREF) would enable the news organizations to better gauge what people think of the news.

Probably not. I assumed people posted on forums like this because they like a good discussion/argument/flaming row and maybe just occasionally learnt something - even if only how to present their prejudices more convincingly in future.:D

Perfectly stated. The notion that the claptrap posted on this or any other political forum could actually influence politics is delusional at best!

And to clarify, my posts here are as much claptrap as everyone elses :p

This one (http://www.opendemocracy.net/forums/forum.jspa?forumID=87) might do. But I'm still trying to figure out if Neocon is Ahmed Chalabi or Zsa Zsa Gabor.

Is Howard Dean the exception to the rule, then?

Why do you ask, is he taking advice from internet forums? Not that it can hurt his chances.. ;)

dsm---Yes!!!...We are being watched! I read in the paper the other day...regarding Kennedy conspiracy theories, "that there is much discussion on internet messageboards and forums, regarding this very thing" (something like that). I, like you, wonder exactly WHICH forums are the most popular...and I wondered if the JREF is held in some regard. I suppose a Google search on something like "political forums (or messageboards)" would turn up some places to check out. Maybe Bill Maher and Al Franken or a Michael Moore have a forum somewhere!:D Perhaps CNN, or Larry King have one. Keep thinking.

I read that as the paper saying " there are a lot of crackpots on internet forums". Can't disagree.;)
