I've seen a number of commercials for the energy drink 5-hour energy (http://www.5hourenergy.com/). What I can't quite figure out is how it is supposed to work. Is this a woo-woo placebo, or is this actually something that can actually give a person more "energy?"

I believe it's caffeine + b12. I've had ok experiences with it, not that that says anything. It's no more woo than a cup of coffee as a caffeine delivery system.

I've taken 5 hour energy 7 or 8 times and in my opinion it does work. However, it is expensive and I wouldn't say it is worth the money unless you had a special occasion to take the beverage.
If you have a party to go to or are dragging your butt at work one day I would take it. It is not something to take everyday unless you have money to pee away. It doesn't work that well.

I believe smoking crack works better...and is less harmful.

Taurine, or some other protein? Supposedly ups your metabolism, but I suspect not as strong as it's placebo effect.

I've drunk it when I was short on sleep, and it didn't help much at all.

The guys in my band swore by it. It didn't do anything for me. By contrast a couple of Excedrin work wonders (has caffeine).
