Re: Rugby World Cup ....

Remember your reply many posts ago when I suggested we could change the subject to Rubgy ?

Just one thing left to say now, eh ?

Hey! Give AT a break. He dives into woo woo forums with a relish that I lost a long time ago.

But then again, picking the wrong team is less a source of mockery than an intrinsic character flaw.

Sorry, UnrepentantSinner, but - as the sceptics are so fond of pointing out - no "breaks" are given to anyone on these Forums !

I'm just waiting for the inevitable "No, that doesn't count because it's anecdotal".

As Clancie will point out... I give breaks where breaks are due.

And no. A definative "such and such" team winning isn't anedotal, it's a prediction, but I wouldn't call Jimmy the Greek psychic for his predictions.

There's a certain science to sports predictions beyond gut feeling.

Now if we're talking about predictions... maybe I should bump Lucianarchy's clock...

Dont be silly...

If your team loses, that means you werent praying hard enough... or perhaps you were praying hard enough, you just did something to make god cry (check to see the date of when it last rained around your parts)... or perhaps too many others were praying for the other team to win... or perhaps you just arent a good Christian (which I guess would be an intrinsic character flaw).

Showme2,

The Game itself was fantastic..

I am an Aussie Rules fan but I was glued to the game.. they hit that Wilkinson with everything but the kitchen sink and he got up to win them the game with a minute to go.. he even is blonde and tanned.. you sure he aint an Aussie ?

England are the best team in the world it was to Australia’s credit that they stayed in the game so long.

I was actually very happy for the Poms to finally win something… It will mean far more to them as they never win much..

I think since England last won a World Cup in 1966 Soccer.. Australia have won :

6 Davis Cups (world Cup tennis) and another on the way.
2 World Cup Rugby Union (and 3 League World Cups)
3 World Cup cricket
5 Commonwealth Games.
Been in the top 10 countries in the Olympics.. (England has managed it once)

Even beat England in the last international Soccer match.

In fact for it population size (20 mill) Australia has been the most successful country the world has ever seen at sport per head of population..

So in a way it is nice to see England finally get a win !!

Thanks Aussie Thinker

I actually agree with everything you say, and it's nice to see others able to lose as graciously as the English. (As you say, we've had a lot of practice at that!)

Glad to see that you did not take my good-natured jibe too seriously (unlike some others on the forum) and, yes, your team did play well and it was a great game.

Took the family to see comedian Al Murray ("The Pub Landlord") at Cambridge last night. (I doubt whether he is known at all outside the UK, but he is a very fast-witted comic and extremely sarcastic. You make sure you are not in the first 4 rows if you go to his live shows!)

There was this ONE Aussie in the audience, and by God did Murray give HIM some stick about the result. But he laughed along with the rest of the audience and, at the end of the show, Murray threw him his England Rugby shirt that he had put on in the second half of the show.

Perhaps the English aren't the only good losers in the world after all.

We have to crow when we can. We don't get the opportunity too often !

Cheers.

Apparently, but I sure as hell wasn't going to get up at 9am to watch it! I did see some of the second half and the extra time. Referee seemed a bit biased against the England side.

Chirac.. hahahaha..

Those Frogs are even more desperate than the Poms.

Ian ,

I agree I think the Aussies did get a good run from the ref.. but my Rugby knowledge is pretty poor.. sometimes its just a swirling mess to me !

Best comment I ever read about English sport was from “The Times” from back just before the 1966 Soccer World Cup against Germany.

It said

“that even if Germany beats England at our national sport we can be satisfied that we have beaten Germany at their national sport twice this century”

In fact while we are giving the Poms a wrap up.. the only War they ever lost that I can dredge up was the US war for independence (well since about 1200 anyway).. so they have a damn good winning record when it matters…lol.

Yes, quite right. Our British imperialist history is rife with such disgusting and unforgiveable behaviour.
