I remember seeing a thread on this topic several months ago, but I can't find it on the search function. If anyone can link to it, or indeed post the instructions as to how to go about it, that would be peachy! :)

many thanks.

Hello....

The program that you are looking for is called TubeTV or you can download an add on for firefox at the firefox site.

Thanks,
Bryan

If you have Mozilla Firefox, you can install a plugin called Download Helper. From there, you can select any video to be saved locally. You may need a player, such as VLC media player to replay.

There are other ways, but this proly the easiest.

Easiest method: use the firefox extension FlashGot (http://flashgot.net/getit). Maksure flashgot media is enabled. Any time you watch a flash video that you don't need ads enabled to see, you can download it, usually in .flv format, but also in any format possibly presented by the player.

However, in yoututube. if you have either &fmt=22 (high definition) or &fmt=18 (high quality) in the URL, you can download it in .mp4 format. I recommend using Greasemonkey and a script called "youtube hq + 720p revised", which will help you switch between quality formats quickly and easily.

If you don't want to bother with software or a third party website, just locate the .flv files in your temporary internet files folder. Move them elsewhere on your computer and rename at will. Sometimes they won't be saved with the .flv extension but will always be called video(1) or get_video(3) or some such.

If you sort the temporary files by size, the youtube vids will almost always be the largest sized files there. All you need to do is make sure you have the flash video codec installed and the vids will play perfectly on most media players.

Many thanks everybody! I've use the Mozilla Firefox application which seems to work well. Next problem, where have all the videos on you tube gone?! Has all the copyrighted material been removed? I want to find stuff from the Discovery Channel, the BBC and Channel 4, but it no longer seems there. Did I miss the great Internet crackdown on copyright? :)

There are other sites. Guba, for one.

Free FLV Converter (http://www.koyotesoft.com/indexEn.html) is the easiest way I've found to save YouTube videos for further watching on my PC or on my iPod.

All the music videos have been removed from the UK version of Youtube while they argue with the PRS about royalties. Although quite a few seem to be back now, so perhaps that's been resolved. The rest of the stuff should be there still, though, what are you looking for?

Thanks for starting this thread. I was wondering the same thing.

Cool! I've been using this and it's pretty good! Thanks! You need VLC to view the low quality flv files, but Quicktime can handle the High Quality mp4s.

One question... can you watch mp4s on iPods? (I guess I should try, but I'm lazy. :))

Hey, Chupacabras, I haven't seen you in the "last person to post in this thread wins" for a long time. Lost your winning spirit? :D ;)

Realplayer (http://www.real.com/) is another option... and it works on other sites, not just youtube... Figured I'd throw that out into the field

Sorry, I just found this post. I am waiting for the decisive moment! :D

As for mp4, I don't own a video iPod, but I have seen somewhere that people post videos specifically for the iPod next to copies of it for computer.

However!

There is this application named SUPER (http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html) (horrible page) which can convert among a lot of formats. The videohelp (http://www.videohelp.com/) website can get you going with apps and help on how to use them.

Hey, Chupacabras, I haven't seen you in the "last person to post in this thread wins" for a long time. Lost your winning spirit? :D ;).FLV files play on my Mac quite happily in Quicktime also. Not sure what I installed to make this happen; my guess is either Perian, the swiss-army knife for Quicktime (http://perian.org/) (on the Mac), or one of the latest updates to Quicktime. Could also be the mere presence of VLC in the Applications folder (I seldom run VLC as a player, since it's not really bug-free for me, such as that I cannot randomly select a playback position in certain files, but it comes with a rather cool engine that other programs can access)
