View Full Version : Prisonplanet blocking my IP Address?

When I try to log on to Prisonplanet.com I get this message:

Error establishing a database connection

But when I try to log on with a proxy server, I get in just fine. Is Alex Jones blocking little old me? Is he that paranoid? Does he not only believe in censorship, but even Communist Chinese style info-banning??

Or am I just paranoid?

Hmmm....

If a JREFer did connect there we'd raise the average IQ by 15 points.

Did you get banned from his forum? I got IP banned over at 9-11 Blogger (those free speech enthusiasts don't allow it on their own sites), and now the only way I can even see the site is to use a proxy server.

nope. i am back in. guess it was a server error.

......or was it????

That's what they want you to think.

i think, they did block me, and they realized how hypocritical they looked for blocking access to information, so they let me back in quietly.

the error you were getting was the website having trouble connecting to the SQL database, meaning you got into the webserver ok, but the SQL server was having issues (and you wouldnt be blocked from the SQL server, since external IPs should never connect directly to it, only via the webserver, it would be pointless to block people)

if your IP was blocked you wouldnt get into the webserver and youd get a connection refused or some similar error

so it looks like in this case you were just paranoid :p

Same with me and that bastion of free speech, LCF. I've been IP banned there for a long time. That reminds me, can any Germans access LCF? Since Oliver got Germany IP range-banned there, the Twoof hasn't spread much.

i believe LCF banned the entire nation of Germany from accessing their site.

what are they so afraid of?????

Our own Oliver, that's what. He annoyed them so much with his fifty socks that they finally just gave up and range-banned all of Germany. A great moment in JREF history, and I certainly hope that Big Owl put a little extra in Oliver's pay envelope that week.

i think that IP ban got reverted in one of the many LC forum migrations (they are on their what, 4th or 5th incarnation now?)

i know i got my entire ISP banned with a single post, that was a good day

They are on their (to my knowledge anyway) fourth iteration. And that must've been some post to get a whole ISP banned.

i think i may have gotten all of Queens, NY banned. :D

But that's cool, cause if they came around my neighborhood they would get their @@@@@ kicked royally.

We love our firemen and police, and don't take kindly to accusations of mass-murder.

Wow.

If I was an evil genius, I would deliberately troll them into blocking IP ranges like that.

On the other hand, I AM an evil genius, have access to a minor personal army, and really, really have nothing to do at the moment. I'll see what I can do. I should probably go check out the site first, though. :P

It's pretty easy to get around an IP block.

I know, and I do so whenever there's some sparkling tidbit of lunacy over at LCF that I just can't pass up. Sadly, that is increasingly rare.

Yeah, i got banned from there simply because I was debating global warming, and I called some of them out for resorting to childish comments like calling me an "obamabot"..

It's either your with or us or against us as usual. There is no gray area with them because they are born with "superior intelligence" and that is why they know global warming is a scam and the NWO will take over soon.

Yet it's funny because instead of going out and doing something about it, they choose to stay in their rooms and call you names on the internet.:boxedin:

For what its worth, as a professional web developer, this answer is 100% correct to the best of my knowledge.

A blocked IP will get usually show you a 404 or 400 error (FORBIDDEN or PAGE NOT FOUND). You might also see a CONNECTION REFUSED, but usually Apache will serve the error page itself.

As already mentioned, an IP block is rather ineffective, as it can be bypassed by the simplest proxy. A better solution is to store a cookie or session on the client machine, and automatically redirect so that the user doesn't realize they have been blocked.

As an admin of a website and webforum for some time, I can tell you that if it was an IP ban from the forum, and not from within apache, they'd still get a connect to the server, but get a forum page informing them of the ban. I don't think most prison planet forum admins have access to the apache control center. That's a level of access that should be very limited.. mainly to the web developer and the head admin.

true, however we arent talking about the forums, it was the site itself, but yes, i would imagine an IP ban to the site itself would be very rare and only doable by one or 2 people

zaphod mentioned using a cookie to redirect, thats how they used to do it at the old loose change forums, theyd add you to a banned group, and when you visited the site it just said you didnt have permission to read the forum, and you didnt get a log out button or anything, so youd have to go find the cookie and delete just to read the forum as a guest (later they started doing IP bans)
