View Full Version : Skepchick Party at TAM Experiences

12th April 2009, 04:35 PM
As this is my first TAM, I'm starting to work on my extra-TAM-curricular activity list.
I'm looking for feedback from those who have gone to the Skepchick party in the past.
To paraphrase Stephen Colbert: Is the Skepchick party a Great party, or The Greatest party?
Rather than start this thread with a bunch of questions, I'd rather leave it more open-ended and ask for the feedback/thoughts/etc. of anyone who's gone in the past.

Well, over the past TAM or two, what used to be called the "Forum Party" has evolved (devolved?) into the "Skepchick Party". The Forum Party used to be great fun. The past 2 Skepchick parties (5.5 & 6) didn't really last long enough to know how good they were.

One tip, which I probably shouldn't share:
At the previous parties, "hotel security" or the "police" showed up and shut things down due to noise complaints. I used "quotes" because these were actually strippers in fake police uniforms, hired to scare away the uncool people. So, if you are accosted by a police officer, hold your ground, do not go anywhere and do not do anything they say. Better yet, start pulling off their clothes and demand that they "get the show started."

Now of all the things I would have thought/guessed about the Skepchick party, not lasting long enough was not even on the answer-radar!

Hmmm. Skeptic(al) parties == veeeeeery intersting.
Note to self: Don't forget to bring camera to TAM!

Way back in the early days of TAM there used to be a Skepchick Pajama Party. Ladies only and it involved attempts by males carrying mass quantities of chocolate to bribe their way in past burly Skepchick PJ Party Security staff. I know because I once was one of those security guards...and thus sworn to secrecy.
The Forum parties are co-ed, don't seem to involve PJs (Although chocolate IS present) but always seem to involve hotel security at some point.

This year, the party being held in an undisclosed off-site location, hotel security won't be an issue.
That's the good news. ;)
And are you saying it wouldn't be a bad idea to come to the party bearing various forms of libations as well as chocolate?

It's always been one of my favorite parties. Even when it didn't last long.

Yes. Very much so.
II have a question. Upon signing up to get an invite to the Skepchick party, I was informed that the undisclosed location would be disclosed, via email, the day before.
The day before, I will be in Las Vegas. I do not own an iPhone, blackberry, laptop, or any other sort of internet accessible device.
Am I doomed to wandering the streets, asking hookers and destitute gamblers where the nearest Skepchick party is?

Or any of the other Skepchicks, many of whom are going to be at TAM, and aren't as scary as Rebecca :) Masala Skeptic (ottle) is probably the easiest one to spot if you don't know any of them. Not that Rebecca isn't incredibly smart, but she sometimes pulls the same trick I do -- asserting her opinion confidently enough that people just take what she says for granted. It's not always right.
I was just listening to a back episode of the SGU podcast, and when someone asked which Greek philosopher drank the hemlock, she confidently answered, "Plato."
So when you see her at TAM, just be sure to say, "Ha ha, it was Socrates!" That will put her in her place, I'm sure. ;)

I assume there will be plenty of booze at the Skepchick party.
I don't care if other people drink at all, but my partner and I don't drink (it makes me antisocial and it makes him cry, ha)
Half the time when we have Atheist Meetups in St. Louis, everyone wants to bar-hop afterward. We usually go home to entertain ourselves (snicker) at that point.
So who else here is going to Skepchick but won't drink?

Actually, there is. When you wake up for the second day of a two-day bylaws committee meeting with an unspeakable hangover because of events involving a hotel bar, a pool table, and someone else buying the bourbon, and can't be late because it's a client thing.

Hey, the skepchick party is on Friday night right?
The Skepchick Party™ (http://skepchick.org/blog/?p=6347) is Saturday night -- and you can take that to the bank.
The link above takes you to the Skepchick's mouth -- so to speak.

Oh my bad, did my remark come across as humorous (sarcastic, maybe, even, possibly?).
Hell, I'm way ahead of you on the dreamin' stuff. ;)

The Skepchick party with Christopher Hitchens was a highlight of TAM5 for me, although I was very new to the JREF and hardly knew anyone yet. Last year I stayed for a while in the sauna that was the TAM6 Skepchick party and I met a lot of cool people, but sadly that party got shut down quite early while I was visiting another party at Caesar's. I have high hopes for this year's party, and look forward to seeing the rest of you there.

What you said. It just won't be the same without Hitchens. Who will tell bawdy jokes that go on for fifteen minutes at a stretch? Can someone volunteer?

I can tell boring jokes that go for 15 minutes at a stretch -- in a pinch. ;)

I just heard we might have to RSVP, to get into the party. Anyone know if that is true?

Yes, that's always been the case. (http://skepchick.org/blog/?p=6347)

Hmm, I just tried to RSVP and it said it was full. I guess I should have been a bit quicker.

If you follow the link in this very thread (look at replies #91 or #100) you will see on the linked Skepchics web page the following:
The day before, we’ll email the exact location of the villa to everyone on the evite list
So, I'd expect to get an email message sometime Friday July 10th.

I see it's already full :( But, I entered myself as a "maybe". So, perhaps I can wait on the line outside, until the bouncers let us in, like they do for night clubs and stuff. I dunno.

Man, I'm glad I just bought an iPhone that can retrieve my email on the go. I hope my 3G provider has a partner in the US that will use my phone to connect.
Actually, I don't think I'll have much of a problem. I RSVPed pretty much the same day the announcement was made.

This from the Skepchick's invite web page:
and we’ll need it to make sure you’re not a crazy person.
So are you sure it's full or are they just telling you that? ;)

be aware that you might pay roaming charges, which can make your bill huge - I mean, hundreds of dollars. Check with your carrier before you leave. You might need to leave your phone off most of the time and just turn it on to check messages.
I was in Canada for two days and had a bill that was $60 extra

I'm wayy pumped for the Meeting & after reading some more of the Skepchicks blog, I'm even more excited. This party sounds like it's going to rock, if the anecdotes are any indication.
