Phony Moderates--people who claim to be "moderate" or "neutral" or "on the fence" or "agnostic", but when push comes to shove, they always, ALWAYS attack one side exclusively, and defend the other side exclusively.

Of course, every issue, every topic of discussion, will have some phony moderates. But it seems to me that conspiracy theories attract a hell of a lot more of them than other issues do. JREF Forum has had at least a dozen phony moderate conspiracy theorists (probably more) in its history.

Why is this, do you think? Why do conspiracy theories attract so many phony moderates? Do you think they're afraid of the stigma of being a "kooky conspiracy theorist"? Or is it something else?

I think it is a debate tactic most of the time. It is a way to "just ask questions", with the actual goal being to attempt to back the person into a corner. It reminds me of the "good person surveys" some Christians use. Sort of an attempt to just get you talking while waiting for you to fall into a trap.

So I suppose what I am saying is that it is a tactic.

I think it's inherent flaws in their character. I have seen snake oil salesmen of many types use this ploy of being "moderate". From religions to 9/11 cults.

I have learned long ago that when dealing with delusional people in cults, dishonesty, trickery, manipulation and arrogance are always employed.

They don't ever seem to see a problem with lying, trickery and manipulation, as they are on not on a search for truth or justice as they always claim. The search they are on is a search for the weak minded, the vulnerable and the gullible to further their agenda and expand their cult.

I think for many it is human nature. We hate, as a species, to make decisions if we do not have to. We always have that little voice inside that says, "What if". It is that voice, I think, that for many prevents them from choosing sides.

Sometimes, I337m4n, a moderate (n) is just one who's trying to moderate (v) his or her own views, or someone else's, or a debate. It can be a sincere exercise or a dishonest tactic, os some combination. Sometimes it can be like a phony smile- it's a little forced at first but becomes more genuine with time. And then it can go backwards again.

As some thoughts from an attempted mderate CTist, hope these help some.

You have to adjust for the fact that almost everybody considers their viewpoint the moderate one.
