View Full Version : Goodbye Marilyn Chambers

Porn star Marilyn Chambers dies at 56 (http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/Movies/04/13/obit.chambers/index.html?iref=mpstoryview)

I remember Behind the Green Door. It was one of the first "mainstream" porn movies, and Marilyn didn't look like the skanky women who had been the mainstay of the industry. She changed things.

Nobody will ever accuse her of being a great actress, but she had a lot of fans and her "Ivory Soap" purity made a lot of people look at porn in a different way.

Like a lot of porn stars though, it wasn't a career that lead to long-lasting fame or riches. When she died, she was living in a trailer.

I know pornography isn't considered an admirable profession, but lets face it, it is one of the biggest industries out there. It is responsible, in a great part, for the exponential growth of the internet. Maybe Marilyn was just a tool of the industry and maybe her life was, to some people, shameful. But she will be remembered.' Don't expect Elton John to write a song about her though.

And to the first person that says, "That sucks", get some new material.

"She was a tool of the porn industry" Tricky? The tool was in her, not of her.

Her song, for the funeral? Something by David Allan Coe seems appropriate. A few suggestions:

Finger ****** Sally

Make Linda Lovelace Gag

Or, from the Rolling Stones Goat's Head Soup Album:

Star Effer

Or a spoof of a Johnny Paycheck Song (Behind Closed Doors) :

But when we get behind
Green
Doors,
And she lets her hair
Hang
Down
Then she makes me glad that I'm a man
'Cos no one knows
what goes on behind closed doors!
... unless they paid for a ticket to the film! :p

Porn actresses were paid doodly in those days. BtGD made a fortune for its producers. Her reward was to get to make more porn movies for doodly.

She got all the cock she wanted for free. Lucky her, as that seemed to be what she was after, one way or the other.

As to not making more dough, she should have had a better agent.

I'd read today she had signed on to BtGD for a percentage of the gross (http://filmdrunk.uproxx.com/2009/04/porn-legend-marilyn-chambers-dead-at-56#comments).

It is very sad, she is too young to die. At 56, that is still to young to go.

I believe it was the redoubtable Ms Chambers who, one one occasion, responded to the director calling "cut" by berating him "you can f*** up this movie, you can f*** up your career, but you do not f*** up my orgasm!"

She was an icon, in some ways.

Responsible for the growth of the internet? Come on! Porn was responsible for the growth of many more industries than that! Videotape, photography, video games... if Pompeii is to be believed, it may have been the driving force behind mosaic technology. Hell, enough fetish amulets have been dug up, one could argue that most of art, indeed most of culture, was in a large part driven by the functional equivalent of porn.

Hard to say though. Removed from cultural context maybe. But then again the US Justice Department is really all about porn, see the statue they use, it has a bared breast, so it is porn.

I'll second Mercutio's point. When any new technology is developed, military applications are investigated first, and applications in the production and/or dissemination of pornography second.

Do you know she was exploited? Was she unable to make decisions on her own? Did she do this unwillingly and unknowingly? If so, where is the proof of it?

I'm not saying there aren't women exploited by porn. But I want more than just assertion if you're going to state any certain one was.

You know. Skepticism and all...

Nice post, and amusing! By the way, the popularizer of that song was Charlie Rich. His 1973 recording hit #1 on the Country charts and into the top 20 Pop charts in 1973.

I never saw her movies, and now I'm too old to care.
I wanted to see the green door one, but never got around to it.

Now, it would be like watching a porn flick right after masturbating.
Ever have to sit through a porn flick, after you came, to save face?

The sound tracks become more noticeable, for one thing.
And the dialog. And the plot.

That's actually the best way to define pornography: it's anything that loses artistic value once you ejaculate.

You know, like Golden Girls, for instance.

The early porn flicks did have great sound tracks, didn't they? ;)

But dialog and plots? They had those?

Saw the Green door, and I think one or two others she made. Guam had three things for sailors:Beer, Porn theaters/strip clubs, and what at the time I was there was billed as the worlds largest Mc Donald's. Guam, "Give Up And Masturbate". ;)

Anyway, sorry to hear of her passing at such an early age. She was living in a trailer? Wow. I'd say she made some bad choices along the way. Seems that (based on Ron's comments) she might have been on the verge of a come back. Sorry she didn't live to make it. :(

I remember 15 years ago her hosting a line of soft core shorts called Marilyn Chambers bedtime stories.

Of the early women in porn she probably did not turn it into a long term career very well.

You must not have watched any porn made before 1985 then, since back in the day, they'd start the movie - since it was considered film - with a long opening montage that listed the credits*.

* Well, to be fair, most movies until the late 70s had the credits at the start.
