Just wanted to recommend a book : "Atheism : The case against god" by George H. Smith.

I think it is much better than the books of the "Four Horsemen".

I found it long, convoluted, and by the same token very in-depth.

It addresses the concept of god, instead of focusing on the religion aspect.

I didn't think it was bad, and agree that since it focuses on the god concept instead of centering around the evils of religion, that it stands above the crowd.

It was very useful for formalizing my atheism, giving it intellectual rigor. Like, is the definition of god internally consistent?

Agreed, it is very good, I have it on my table next to the bible and BOM every time a mormon missionary or some Jehovas witness knocks on the door ;)

Just as debunking ID is not enough, and you need good science, debunking religion is not enough - you need good philosophy.

The concept of god (and the concept of the supernatural) have, or don't have validity without any relationship to the religions. To discuss them, we need good philosophy.
