Out for a drive the other day, I spotted this banner (http://www.flickr.com/photos/robertorocco/3430072644/), and couldn't help laughing. I suppose it makes an interesting counterpoint to the atheist bus ads. Smacks of desperation though.
Turns out there's a website (http://www.trypraying.org/). It's lots of fun, especially the "TryFacts" section. Some mental backflips going on there - this page (http://www.drypoolparish.org.uk/trypraying/TJMp51) in particular.
It's an interesting marketing approach, when you consider that when the "agnostics" it's aimed at (http://www.prayforscotland.org.uk/?p=463) "try praying", there's a fairly high chance that precisely sod all will happen. Not, you might think, the best advertisement for what they're selling.
Dwindling congregation? Try Praying!

Good grief. That site looks like it could have been written by DOC.

I've prayed sincerely three times in my life. Didn't have an effect either time.

When you call my name, it's like a little prayer.

My prayer to God is a very short one: "O Lord, make my enemies most ridiculous!" God has granted it.

What horrible font. Looks like a misspelling. Trepanning? Taxpaying?

On the right side of the horrible lavender "Did You Know" box, there is a footnote notation after "One in three people believe God will answer their prayers," but I do not see an actual footnote anywhere. Am I missing something?

They've buggered up the footnote - what they mean to refer to is this 2007 survey (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7089139.stm), and according to the BBC,
One in three adults agreed with the statement "there is a God who watches over me and answers my prayer", according to the survey.

I was in a brief conversation the other day with someone who, to my surprise, uttered the following statement:
"Have you asked Jesus to cure your cancer?"
I was surprised by this not because they were talking about me praying to cure my cancer, but because I had not talked with them about my illness, it was not part of the conversation and was not their business to be asking about in the company and setting we were in.
My response was as follows:
"Have you considered surgery to remove the penis from your forehead? When you realize why that question is not only inappropriate but completely insulting you'll understand why I don't answer your question."

I prayed that Heidi Klum would make dinner for me tonight. It didn't work. :(

The banner may as well say 'Do Nothing'.

Let's see: Prayer hasn't worked for Enan Smith.
Prayer hasn't worked for Ducky.
It hasn't even worked for me.

To paraphrase:
I'll take the help of one pair of hard working hands over a million folded in prayer any day.

Maybe it should just say CALM DOWN.
DON'T PANIC would be another good phrase.

I think prayer and the alternative were both tested for comparison pretty well recently with a couple of crashing passenger jets.

That was FedEx's tagline for a while - they even made buttons with the phrase on them.
