So I got a new computer, first time Vista user, blah blah blah. It's been tough Google-searching for my problem.
When I press the wheel button on my mouse while web-browsing (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer), I get a magnifying glass icon. I would much prefer to press the button and then rapidly scroll a webpage. Mouse properties only allows me to adjust how far each click of the mouse wheel scrolls. Again, I want to press the button and then just slide the mouse up and down to scroll the page.

Not familiar with windows systems per se, but is there an "Accessibility" section of your control panel that may have magnified reading turned on?

That's what happens on my system. Vista Home Premium and Firefox.

What's the mouse? It may be adjustable in its software.
ETA - Or buy a Logitech Revolution (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/mice_pointers/mice/devices/130&cl=gb,en) - clicking the wheel puts it into free spin mode
EETA - Just checked my mouse software (Logitech), setting the wheel button to "Auto Scroll" allows the behaviour you're after.

Does the icon do anything? Just thinking that might help figure out which setting is turned on. What happens when that icon appears?
Also do you have intellipoint on the mouse?
I have tried the search as well. rather frustrating. I assume it is a Windows issue since it runs across browser platforms.

USB Overdrive (http://www.usboverdrive.com/) lets you configure your mouse wheels and buttons, on an application-by-application basis, to do pretty much whatever you want them to do. Unfortunately, you seem to be running on the wrong sort of system to use it.

Download the lates driver for your mouse, it seems that the driver installed is a lousy standard windows driver. Good luck if it's a no-name mouse... :(

Yeah. That doesn't help. Thanks for the obligatory OS fanboy post though.

Bob wouldn't be Bob if he didn't suggest anything other than what he likes is crap. He did the same thing when I had a question about my Tiburon.
As to the OP, if I knew anything about Vista I'd try to help. Alas, I haven't touched it. Still, do you have a mouse that uses it's own software? A lot of that is configurable.
I did get a couple good hits Googling "configuring mouse buttons Vista" just now. http://www.vistaclues.com/configure-the-special-buttons-on-your-mouse/ might help if you have an MS mouse.

If the mouse has it's own software, you might try un-installing it.
The default windows driver probably behaves the way you want..
