Serial robocallers really got a wrong number last week when they dialed a certain New Yorker's cell phone to hawk a bogus car warranty.

The cell phone in question belonged to Sen. Chuck Schumer and the call interrupted an important health-care reform briefing in Washington, D.C.

Schumer, a driving force behind the original Do Not Call List that banned such calls, is now on the warpath to hang up on the con men for good.

"These are scam artists," Schumer said. "The Federal Trade Commission needs to seek these people out and shut them down."

The calls - made to randomly generated numbers and offering bogus car warranties - are a national problem involving several companies in different states. The Better Business Bureau reports receiving 140,000 complaints nationwide.

"We need a national crackdown," said Schumer.

I can't stand these calls. Asking to be removed either results in profanities from the callers or no action at all. Surely we have the technology to shut down these criminals more quickly.

I just got another one of these an hour ago. I had been about ready to write my local rep about it. Apparently lots of other people are getting calls from the same number but reporting it has done nothing so far.

Agreed. These robocalls are bad enough, that they are now being used by scam artists makes a crackdown even more necessary.

Why just car-warranty calls?

Nearly every day I get a robo-call telling me it's my "last chance" to get the interest rate lowered on my credit card.

Of course, I haven't had a balance on my credit card in over 7 years and I haven't even used one in 2 years...
