View Full Version : Potential Alternative to Quarks

Hi all,

Having been in Las Vegas last week on business (i.e. I did not have enough time to explore as much as I'd like to have), I thought I'd toss this out to the collective for whatever (little?) it's worth:

First, it seems to me, the point of going to Quarks was to be, well going to Quarks!

As that clearly isn't happening this year, I might suggest, absent some equally geeky awesomeness in a bar, we may as well just hang at South Point. It has convenience going for it, that's for sure.

But, if anyone is looking for alternatives, I've found something which might interest some of us:

At the Town Square (http://www.townsquarelasvegas.com/) shopping center (about 3 miles from South Point) there are several bars/restaurants within a couple of hundred feet of each other. The nice thing about this, there is surely something to be had for everyone. A quick rundown of what I found there...

1. The Yard House (http://www.yardhouse.com/) - More types of beer than anywhere else (so they claim). Brewpub type of atmosphere. Food and drinks. Small than and directly downstairs from the Cadillac Ranch (q.v.). Fairly spacious but could be overwhelmed if a lot of us show up. Casual food and drinks.

2. Cadillac Ranch (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Las-Vegas-NV/Cadillac-Ranch-LV/139996845337) - Large, plenty of room. Three separate indoor bar areas, outdoor patio areas (one of them quite large), mechanical bull (for those so inclined). Upscale casual food and drinks.

3. Blue Martini (http://www.bluemartinilounge.com/) - Club. Upscale "hipificated." Seems like this is where the beautiful people go. Had something of a meat joint feel, but at the same time is a very classy place. Live music. Drinks only.

4. Bar Louis (http://www.myspace.com/barlouievegas) - More spartan feel than the others. There was a pretty lame sounding band playing when I dropped by (actually sort of made me want to leave). Food and drinks.

5. Tommy Bahamas (http://www.tommybahama.com/TBG/Cafes.jsp) - Yes, some of the TB clothing stores have attached restaurants/bars. Pretty classy with the typical TB tropical feel. Immediate bar area not terribly large, but they have a sort of overflow area behind the bar which would hold quite a few of us.

What I liked about the Town Square is that literally within a few hundred feet, you have 5 different choices in terms of hanging/drinking/eating.

Do I want to go? Not unless a lot of other people do. To be sure, none of these places are Quarks and had I to choose, I'd probably pick Cadillac Ranch.

Oh, and it's not on The Strip -- somehow that appeals to me. ;)

FWIW...

I know. That's why I suggested we might just want to hang out at take over the bar scene at South Point. Save the cab ride and all.

I'm not invested in any particular bar myself. I'm mainly interested in making lots and lots of new friends!

Sorry, Toby. Noplace is Quark's right now. :(

And, from what I've heard/read, I think part of the reason Quark's was such fun was because it was in the hotel, and people didn't have so far to go when it was over.

Nerdiest thing in town right now is Lonnie Hammargren's house. Maybe you can make an appointment.

I thought this thread was going to be another one about overturning established physics...

Never having been to a TAM, I can say that keeping things at the South Point seems easier for us, saving on cabs, bus rides, etc. I, too, want to meet as many new friends as I can!

I think you'll find that the vast majority of forumites will be quite happy to stay in at the Southpointe bar. There really is no need to go out.

I think at TAM 6, I didn't venture out of the hotel until Sat night for P&T, and Sunday for lunch and then dinner at the Peppermill.

Then that's a good thing, I think!

Well I for one and going to be seriously flexible. Go with the flow to use an old cliché. Other than the P&T show, maybe the Skepchicks party, I'm not heavily scheduled and I'm pretty much open to meeting new friends, new experiences, hangin', talkin', whatever.

What are we down to now? 52 days? (Well 51 until I travel -- not that I'm counting or anything!) ;-)

I've been getting really confused about the timing lately because we're going to Vegas in June for a different event. I have to keep reminding myself that I'm going to be hanging out with my parents and siblings, and that all the skeptical drunks will have to wait another month.

That's why I use my little "Days Until" app on my iPod Touch!

Helps keep all them events all straight in my mind and my life.

By the by, it's now 49 days until I fly to TAM! wOOt!

But first I'm off to the SacJazz festival (http://www.sacjazz.com/) in an hour or so! Woo Hoo!
