So... I have a question.

The second JREF staff member will announce “yes” to indicate a hit or “no” to indicate a miss.

If he's getting feedback during the test about whether he's hit or not, doesn't that help him narrow down future choices, at least within each group?

A good question, but no. Each pair is independent. This has been carefully considered in the test design.
