It sounds as if Finland would save money in defense spending it if does join. What are the advantages to remaining non-aligned, and what military threats are there against Finland today, if any? You guys did a fine job against Russia a few years ago.

It has been noted that NATO membership would actually cost less in the long run. It has been said that because NATO permits each nation to concentrate their defenses on certain sectors and relying upon outside reinforcement to cover the other sectors. The net result is that way better effect at less cost.
It has been also claimed that through NATO infrastructure programmes Finland can receive funding from NATO in order to develop certain defense related infrastructure, like for example harbours, airfields, communications and surveillance. from here: http://www.mv.helsinki.fi/home/mthure/linkit.html
I don't know how NATO membership has benefitted or hurt most countries. Why not post this question in the politics forum? You might get some interesting responses.
Is non-alignment desirable for its own sake? In the case of large countries it seems to allow greater flexibility in forming short-term partnerships with anyone, and may provide some economic leverage. I don't know how much global influence Finland has or whether you can use it to your advantage.
My ignorance is vast and deep.

They should put NATO hq in the old powerhouse in downtown Tampere, the one right next to the big brewpub on the west side of the river.
