i'll bite on this one...
consciousness is the state of being alert/awake and able to interact with your surroundings.
i claim to be neither a philosopher or medical professional but in my professional opinion my definition can apply to both medical and philosophical usage. :D

A neural net able to interact with it's environment.

about as vague as the question...but it happens to coincide with my stance on the issue.

Ask Malerin.

Go.

Consciousness is a description of a complex and poorly defined set of behaviors. I think that it is not meaningful without the context of defintion as in 'levels of consciousness'=awareness/arousal.

Consciousness is the property expressed by systems complex enough to be aware of their own consciousness.
If that seems like circular reasoning to you, then you have just demonstrated consciousness. :)
