Hi all,

Several episodes ago, Steve mentioned that the optimum amount of alcohol anyone should have was, "none." However, I've recently read several articles (which reference studies) that a moderate amount of alcohol, for an otherwise healthy person, is better for you than no alcohol at all.

So, what's the deal?

Looks to me like the more recent studies indicate that the answer is "none". One big factor that was not often corrected for in earlier studies are people who are not drinking because they are already sick.

Alcohol cleans your vascular system, but lowers brain volume.

Are you more worried about heart disease, or Alzheimer's?

A little less than posting an incorrect sentence as a thread title.

ETA: Sorry, I meant "just a touch beyond posting an incorrect sentence as a thread title while naked with a blonde 25 years your junior"

I am in the process of a thorough, rigorous and exhaustive testing procedure on this exact subject, with clinical trials running nearly every day. ;)

The science behind the theory that moderate drinking is good for you is questionable:

http://www.theage.com.au/world/science-steps-up-to-the-bar-20090626-czvm.html

"The bottom line is there has not been a single study done on moderate alcohol consumption and mortality outcomes that is a 'gold standard' kind of study — the kind of randomised controlled clinical trial that we would be required to have in order to approve a new pharmaceutical agent in this country," said Dr Tim Naimi, an epidemiologist with the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
Even avid supporters of moderate drinking temper their recommendations with warnings about the dangers of alcohol, which has been tied to breast cancer and can lead to accidents even when consumed in small amounts, and is linked with liver disease, cancers, heart damage and strokes when consumed in larger amounts.
