My father treated the bible as literature, and tried to give it personal interpretations that were meaningful to him.

As a result of that, for a very long time, when religious people talked about god, I was sure that they speak metaphorically and not literally.

I reasoned that if they would speak literally, that would make no sense at all. So probably it is more a metaphorical meaning, or an existential one that shows one's attitude to life, but isn't about facts.

Did something like that happen to anyone else?

Yeah pretty much the entire Catholic Church. :) I am sure someone more knowledgable will weight in but I believe lit experts see the Bible as being a bit literal and a bit metaphorical
