View Full Version : A reborn non-believer

I have a confession to make.

I used to believe in all kinds of woo-woo. Aliens, ghost, yeti's, pyschics, etc, you name it, I loved to read about it.

But after years of never seeing anything other than spoofs, frauds, trickery and flat out lies, I'm a rebron skeptic.

It's all BS, and I'm sick of it. Show me the body, show me the ship, or STFU.

Welcome. As a member of this forum I'm sure you will find more Aliens, ghost, yeti's, pyschics, etc than you ever knew existed (but don't let that frighten you).

Praise materialism, another material mind saved from the irrationality of woo-wooism by the great process of rational thinking!

Welcome, I hope you enjoy it here. The huge lack of any evidence does get wearing after a while doesn't it?

Demi,

Nice to have you aboard.

The beauty of being rational is you don’t lose out on examining all the interesting woo woo stuff.. in fact on a forum like this you get to look at it even more.

But you ALWAYS examine it with a view to .. what trick are they doing there ?.. what natural process is being used ?..

Experience will ALWAYS show a natural answer…

Don't mean to pick on you but what you're describing sounds more like another belief then skepticism. I don't mean you're wrong and you should believe in (insert some woo-woo crap here) but just because you didn't see it you decided it doesn't exist? To me that implies if someone showed you something you'd automatically believe it.

For example, take the whole God issue. Say tomorrow a guy appears out of nowhere and says he is Jesus Christ and that God is coming soon to take all the sinners away. I would not believe him though, I'd only believe that he has the ability to appear out of nowhere. :)

While it's good to have a world-view untainted by things untestable or unproven, the way we get to that world-view is very important. I might be wrong but in your case it sounded like you just jumped from one band-wagon to another.

Skepticism isn't about believing or disbelieving things, it's about approaching things critically. It's about examining claims based on their evidence.

I realise I'm basing my response to you on a very limited exposure to your postings so please don't take offense to my ranting.. I'm in a ranting mood right now :)

p.s.

welcome to the forum.

There are Yetis. They're just very very evil (http://host.randi.org/vbulletin/member.php?action=getinfo&find=lastposter&threadid=31614).

I stated in a thread some time back, I'm not interested in vagueries, claims, interpretive results, wild-eyed theories and speculation or other non-sense. I'm glad to see a like minded individual. Where's the beef?

Join us in an all out no holds barred war on those who try to destroy science! It is up to us the great defenders of science to prevent this!

The day kooks learn to present arguments for their ludicrous position absent of flawed logical fallacies unlike their superior skeptic opposition will be a day that the righteous critical thinkers shall never bear witness to. - !Xx+-Rational-+xX!

No, I've come to this conclusion after never seeing anything that proved to my satisfaction that it could not be replicated by normal physical/psycological means. Trust me, it was a hard dream to awake from.

I'd have to say the ability to appear out of nowhere would be pretty F'n miraculous, given it wasn't some parlor trick, and would confess my sins just to cover my ass. ;)

Now I'm can't tottaly dismiss everything; given the vast size of the universe, there's bound to be plenty of intelligent life out there, but are they coming here probing our bung-holes and slaughtering our cattle? Me thinks not.

and thx all for the warm welcome.

Welcome to the forum Demigorgon.

I used to read all kinds of paranormal books when I was about 8 years old. It was exciting, and the Truth wasn't really that important to me, so I can understand where you're coming from. Welcome to the (hopefully) real world.

Do you have a point, Whodini? I dare say that it's not only the skeptics who ought to consider how they look to "outsiders". That circle **** you joined in on bashing Bill Hoyt is a classic example of the defeated smashing down the library.
