How about these ridiculous one or two word names some musicians have annointed themselves with? Like Sting, Slash, and the worst, mediocre U2 guitarist's The Edge. I can't think of any others at the moment. At least Meatloaf is bearable as it is humorous and self-deprecating. Does anyone really call these buffoons by such names? I sure wouldn't. It'd be "hey, there's the egotistical dickhead with the made-up name" or simply "yo f&ckface".

And how about "the artist formerly known as..."?

Forgot about him. Prince qualifies, though I read something that he changed to the symbol due to some legal wrangling that involved him losing rights of some sort. I don't remember the story or whether it was confirmed but at the time it sounded justified and not just an ego trip. Curious now as to the real story...

The Edge is cool.*
It's people with one real name that piss me off. I think the most pathetic one was Jackee Harry who wanted to go by Jackee. About the time she was being referred to as such, her star had faded. Cher, Rosanne, Madonna, etc. When we live in a world were Prince Edward goes by Edward Windsor, I think friggin' Madonna can use her last name.
Don't even get me started about Teller...
*The Edge is not cool and it's a realatively cool stage name that would be cool for somebody else.

Changing your name would be a bad idea. It would lead to many bad jokes.
For example:
No mo' Moe....
And your name does not imply anthing pretentious. It would be oddly funny if "The Edge" decided to call himself "The Tang" instead. (the tang is the part of a sword blade that extends down into the handle.) Not sharp and little noticed, much like the man himself.

I guess I should've mentioned that my real, legal name is one word: BTox. ;)

One more I forgot, from my Godhead CD, the bassist and programmer calls himself "The Method". OK, with these "The" names, do they go by "The" for short? Please...
