The US and the USSR looked at the space race from different perspectives. The US thought of each accomplishment as a step in a long journey. The USSR just wanted to be first. Once the USSR reached the limit of what could be thrown together the US overtook them and flew to the moon.

I figure that if NASA faked the moon landing, some disgruntled NASA ex-employee(s) or dolly grip would have ratted them out by now. At least I don't think I overlooked it if they did. Also, the dialogue would have been retaped to get the correct reading of the historic line "A small step for A man – a giant step for mankind!" I recall that it was recited wrong in the original coverage.
