I guess if anyone wants to get super nitpicky, you would call Hotei "a Buddha" rather than "Buddha" or "the Buddha". He is actually quite a fun character. If anyone ever develops a "Major Religions of the World" RPG, I want to play Hotei!
I call Ganesh.

I call Ganesh.
Do you know if such a game exists? I am not that much of a gamer, so I have no idea.
If it doesn't, that might be an opportunity for the JREF R&P denizens. It could be almost as profitable, and quite a bit more ethical, than starting a new religion...

I don't, but I bet we could come up with one using the D20 rules. I just finished re-reading "American Gods", that's a damn good campaign setting right there.

I call Ganesh.
Do you *have* to play in character? If not I call Jesus; Nailing prostitutes to my cross (in dutch this *is* funnier) and beating up Romans after a sip of my magic wine....

I can't decide guys. Virgin Mary or Inanna?
I suppose I could always be Kali, but I think I stab enough people in the face during ImaginalDisc's games.

There's the boardgame Playing Gods (http://www.playinggods.com/) from skeptic Benjamin Radford (http://www.radfordbooks.com/). He showed a prototype at TAM6, and I bought a couple of copies once it became available. It's not an RPG, though.

Ah, I had wondered why this was split off. It seemed a bit random, even for Lisa.
Anyway, since this is serious, I guess the first thing to do is to start figuring out some outlines. I agree, Gaiman's book would make for a great campaign, but copyright issues are a bitch. It may be possible to use that as a launching point, or point potential players towards that as an option.
Next, should we limit the pantheons, or let it be every god/dess for itself? Personally, I would say the more the merrier, but it must be something that has an established background, rather than letting people develop their deities willy-nilly. That tends to put a limit on what the various gods can get away with. For example, Yahweh can be all about the smiting, but he has to permanently lose adherents everytime they worship someone else. Ten commandments and all. Kali, on the other hand, can just go straight to the smiting.
Do we want to give the players set goals? Can they acquire high priests/gurus/saints to aid their cause? Just open it to pure mayhem and last deity standing wins?
I think I may need to ponder this over the weekend.
