View Full Version : I am back home!

Hello all! My lovely better half brought me home yesterday (Tuesday), after almost eleven months of convalescence/incarceration. it has been a heady mixture of heaven (snuggling!) and generous dollops of Hell (Trips to the bathroom have become akin to climbing Mt. Everest).

At some future date I will create an epic thank-you thread here, but for now, let me just say that words alone cannot come close to conveying the gratitude we feel for all of the love, concern and support we have received from so many, especialy from JREF forumites. And ofcourse I must thank Susan, truly my better half, and the Bestest Wife Ever, for her tireless advocacy on my behalf. without her, I would quite probably be dead. But then, without her, life would not be worth living.

I hope to post much more over the coming days, and possibly even add an article or two to the SSB site.

My very best and warm regards to you all,

-RSL

So looking forward to seeing you at tam.

I'm also glad that you and Julio the new houseboy Susan hired to "help out" around the house are getting along well. And Andre the French bodybuilder (he's training for the Olympics) that takes care of the yard. And Sven (he was Mr.Europe 2005) who does I'm not sure what yet....

Hello all! My lovely better half brought me home yesterday (Tuesday), after almost eleven months of convalescence/incarceration. it has been a heady mixture of heaven (snuggling!) and generous dollops of Hell (Trips to the bathroom have become akin to climbing Mt. Everest). This is great news, Robert. Congrats and best wishes.

I want to thank you for introducing a new euphemsim for visiting the toilet. "Climbing up Mt. Everest" is quite a good one, and I can't wait to try it with my new wife. (I get married tomorrow.)

Many years ago, I had major surgery, and during my recovery, every effort was a major struggle. If an item fell from a table onto the floor, it may as well have fallen all the way to the Moon, as an item on the floor was no more reachable for me than the Moon. Going to the bathroom was a major production. Making a trip to the mailbox was like a walk halfway around the continent.

I got better, yes, but I have NEVER forgotten the difficulty of those days. I no longer take simple things, like bending over to pick up a coin or a simple walk to the mailbox, for granted. To this day, I remind myself that it is a joy to walk, because I CAN, and I remember there were times that I COULD NOT.

My ordeal was much shorter than yours, Robert, a matter of weeks instead of months, and I cannot say that my situation is truly comparable to yours. I can only surmise that I experienced just a small taste of your difficulties. But I expect that with continued practice and determination and attitude, your difficulties will ease up, and that you will find profound joys in what you used to think were trivial or bothersome activities.

You have been a strong force for reason and fought hard against the crooks and charlatans. That's incredibly noble and good. You deserve all the praise in the world.

Robert, I rarely wear hats, but I proudly wore my StopSylvia hat in April when I ran a half marathon while juggling 3 clubs. . . in the rain.

ETA: Removed the links to the photos that didn't work. Instead, you have to go to http://www.runphotos.com , select the event "Go St. Louis Marathon and Half, 2009" and enter my bib number 13070.

I'm too cheap to buy the higher res photos, and I don't think you can see the Stop Sylvia logo on these, but it's there. (Note: My time was 2:30, the time displayed at the finish line is from the start of the starting line--there were some 18,000 starters. I ran this thing with very little training, since I'm a wimp when it comes to running over the winter. I was slow, but I ran and juggled non-stop and only dropped a club one time.)

Finally browsed my way over here, and got the best piece of news I've had all week. Welcome back. To home, to family, to this place.

Now, to be a bit of a Pain In The Ass (patent pending); KEEP WORKING OUT!!! KEEP PUSHING YOURSELF!!! DON'T REST ON YOUR LAURELS!! To be the best Robert Lancaster you can be will still take work and after 8-10 months rehabbing, where other people set your schedule and make you do things, you will be on your own for a lot of time, and the temptation to slack off will be great--But don't, keep working, keep pressing, keep improving--that woman you're married too deserves that!

OK, end of "fuss-budget" rant. I look forward to seeing you next week at TAM, as does everyone else (should I sign you up for the Bowling activity?;) )

Take care, my friend

Robert still has some mobility problems, as is to be expected, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with his mind! We spent the evening laughing and swapping stories. He had some doozies about his stay in care, that's for sure!

Thanks Robert and Susan for spending your time with me. It was fantastic.

Did you miss the entire live feed? Robert was there, and spoke to the crowd a couple times, and received the first annual Citizen's Skeptic Award.

Yes. I did not see any timetable published about what was on at what time. The reason could be that I did not look for any such information.

Anything on youtube yet?

It's the first time in memory that I shed a tear on a post. I have never met the man, but his efforts to eradicate woo from the world has my support in the strongest way possible.
The Sylvia Browns and John Edwards of this world do much more damage to gullible people than you can imagine. I love the man, and there should be more people like him. A hardy hand shake in cyberspace, is the best I can do at the moment apart from contributing to his cause and health by monetary means.

How in the H did I miss this thread? (Oh,... from the 2nd - I was sans broadband and then a minor stay in the hospital.....)

Damn, Robert!!!! Welcome home! This is tremendous news in the middle of a fairly rotten two weeks, so thanks for giving me a little cheer (in addition to you herculean efforts over the years).

And about that Susan person? I'd keep her if I were you. I hate throwing around mushy terms, but I think you rarely see such unflinching/unfailing love. Now you guys take it easy and gear up for the woo-crushing to come.

Arthwollipot, it was fantastic getting to know you. hcmom, you are one fantastic lady - thanks for sharing your home with us. And everybody who attended TAM and gave us hugs, thanks a bunch. To everyone here on the Forum who could not make it to TAM but have expressed well-wishes, thank you.

And to the JREF: The award is appreciated more than you'll ever know by the both of us. I'm so glad I got Robert to TAM, even though I have been criticized for it. I'm hoping the "faith" you have all expressed in him will inspire him to get back to work on the websites. The award was just what the doctor ordered. Thank you.

All:

Sad to say, I am only now, four months later, getting around to reading all of the posts in this thread. My heartfelt thanks to all fr their kind words. I lack the focus and energy to do my old multi-quote reply, but I absolutely HAVE to quote this one:

... bolding mine. What? you were criticized for taking me to TAM? I'll ask you for details in person, but please know how incredibly grateful I am to you for having taken me to TAM, as well as for all else that yuo have done (and continue to do) for me. No man has ever had a better wife than I do, booful. I love you far more than you will ever know, regardless of how many times a day I tell you. Mwaah!!!

Before the stroke you often did a huge multi quote of all the posts that were in any thread and gave a response to them. Are you going to do that for all the threads about you? We did discuss this once when you were in hospital and the software will allow you to do heaps of multi quotes.

<Insert laughing dog here>

Edit2. Found the relevant quotes
So you don't worry that there might be something wrong, I'm posting to let you know we never got around to Robert doing one of his famous multi-quotes on this thread. We were too busy going through all the posts on the "RSL in hospital" thread. I've read many of them to him before, and he read a few himself, but he's trying to get a picture of what was happening with his family (including me) during the time he does not remember. Basically, he only knows the last 3 weeks or so. And he's a bit dumbfounded by all the wonderful things that were said about him in this community.
<snip>
Thanks,
Susan

Just thinking about that multi-quote reply. Robert would need to reply to about 400 posts. That would test the forum software. How many quotes can you make in one reply?

Spend just over 1 minute per post and that is 7 hours work.

Tip. Cut and paste it into another document and do frequent saves. Otherwise you might lose the lot.

Edit. I managed to quote the first 149 posts from the other thread here http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?postid=4207003#post4207003. Only hope I am not the first person to get a yellow flag for posting in that place. This means the software is good to go.

Edit2. However I think a better option is to download the thread and then edit the text file. That is if you are crazy enough to even think about doing it.

:D

Yes, and if you look towards the end of that thread, you'll see where I did some multi-quotes and responded to more than a hundred of the earlier posts.

I hope to reply to the rest some time, but, between my difficulty in focusing on a task for very long, my inability to use my left hand when typing, and the funky problems I have with my PC, I don't know when I will be able to do so.

You probably will too!

Good grief, that's a year worth of posts, many of us posting more than once to say the least, and quite a few threads. I suspect most of us would be more than happy to consider them all replied to with any one of the thoughtful posts you've made since you got out of the hospital, many of which have included thanks and well wishes to all of us. :)

ETA: In other words, we have been more than acknowledged, you have in your characteristically kind and thoughtful way made all of us feel quite thanked, and we are all just thrilled to have you back!

Tanks, ExM! If I had my druthers, I'd reply to each post individually. But I think i am just going to have to realize that just isn't realistic, given the circumstances. I hope that you are right, and that most of the forum members realize how grateful i am to them for everything. Now I'm going to wrap this up before my emotional lability kicks in again. :(

I did not count the words by hand. I used an Excel spreadsheet to do it for me. It only took 10 minutes.

I also looked at my hands and I could not see any time on them. I had only just washed them. :)

I figured as much. I was merely implying that, whatever amount of time was spent, it may have been put to better use. But hey, it's your time.

I also looked at my hands and I could not see any time on them. I had only just washed them. :)Yes, I think that you did indeed wash your hands of those ten minutes. :)
