Damn it. I should have known. My refrigerator magnets are screwing up my beer. No wonder I wake up on Saturdays with a headache

I see this has also been spotted by the Guardian's Bad Science correspondent (http://www.guardian.co.uk/life/badscience/).

Does this mean people taste better after an MRI? I wonder if there are any cannibals out there who could fill us in on this.

About a year ago, I came across "The Perfect Sommelier", in an outlet mall, a device claiming to greatly improve the flavor of wine.

Here's a site about it, with the obligatory "I'm a skeptic, and I'm convinced" testimonials.

http://www.cellarnot.com/

It consists of a magnetic base, on which a wine bottle would be placed, and a magnetic stopper that would go in the top.

I think magnets are pretty cool, so I opened a few boxes right there in the store to check it out.

The magnets were certainly not neodymium magnets (although they didn't claim to be in this particular device); I own various sizes and shapes of neodymium magnets and I can recognize the way they tear your skin off if you get your finger caught between them.

But what really got me was that the polarity of the magnets was random from item to item, meaning that in some units the magnetic fields would tend to cancel out in the bottle; almost as if whoever was assembling them either had no knowledge of the properties of magnetism, or had no faith that it really mattered.
