Not to put too fine a point on it, but in case that link doesn't make it clear to you, The Onion is a satirical web site/newspaper/show. Asking if the content they produce is a "hoax" is a little like asking if the film This is Spinal Tap is a "hoax".

Few people know that the Onion is actually a factual news outlet for the Earth of an alternative Universe. It only appears to be satire in our Universe.

So what is their humorous alternative? CNN? MSNBC? FOX?

Look on the bright side - now you have your own in-joke!

Don't be ashamed or embarrassed. First off, you didn't get sucked in completely. You had the sense to come to a place where you knew you'd find people who know and ask if it was legit. Those are points in your favor and it's a good thing to remember the next time you find something that doesn't seem right.

Second, as you've already seen, The Onion has very high production values which easily rival "real" news networks. And their actors are very good at delivering their lines with a straight face. The Onion has successfully fooled a lot of people. You're no worse off than the rest of us. ;)

To be brutally honest, I myself was taken in by the video a for a good ten seconds until I noticed the Onion logo. I apologize for any unnecessary snark.

The funny thing is, I was linked to the Onion's video a few months ago by a Truther, and when I pointed out that the Onion was satire, I was effectively told I was using ad hominem.

Fantastic.

Lol, airplane. My girlfriends mum is called shirley. I try to avoid that gag, as much as I am tempted ;)
