View Full Version : I bought the God Delusion!

OK, so I bought the God Delusion, and though I don't know if I'll ever read it cover to cover, I've spent the last days browsing through it, covering large portions, and these are my impressions so far:

He raises a lot of good points about a lot of topics, and his book is well worth reading both for theists and nontheists. Better yet, even after all my posts here and the documentaries and articles and lectures by him I've come across on the Web, there was still lots of new stuff in there.
I earlier complained that Dawkins was unnecessarily rude. This was an impression garnished from watching his documentary The Root of All Evil? and listening to his reading of The God Delusion. He seems a lot less rude when you read him in context, though, in fact, the whole book comes across as rather warm and friendly, and is easy to read, except maybe for the part on the origins of religion, where he discusses genes and alleles and whatnot. Forgive me for the cliche, but it's one of few books I've read that I felt could change lives.

I heartily recommend this book. Society without God is next on my list, provided I ever find it in a Norwegian book store (yes, I know, you'd think it'd have been a best seller over here).

I bought it last weekend too, along with Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged...

As for society without god, I recommend watching South Park episodes Go-Go-God Part I and II instead :P

Patrick:

There's a "God Delusion" book discussion group coming up in LV, if you're interested:

I buy my books on eBay. Much cheaper, and you're not limited by what Norwegian bookstores bother to sell.

Books on atheism don't sell well here, where its pretty much the default position and there's not much controversy over the issue.

You just now bought it? I thought I was late - I bought it last year at the used book store for $13 (hard cover).

By the way, I watched one of the latest Mr. Deity episode last night, and at the beginning Lucy is reading a book. Guess which book it is? The episode is here:

I'm an atheist but I wasn't really convinced by The God Delusion. I preferred Hitchins and Harris

Save yourself time on Ayn Rand and watch South Park's 'Chicken Lover' episode. It tells you everything you need to know about 'Atlas Shrugged'

If you are really pressed for time, the relevant part of the episode is ~ 30s from the end.

Very cool, thanks for the heads up. I totally forgot about checking MeetUp for this kind of stuff. I'm going to have to sign up later. Thanks! :)

It is 112 degrees (44.4 C) here in town...and that is hot. So I'm grabbing my book and heading to the local iced coffee shop to cool off. Too bad TAM wasn't held this weekend... :P

HaHa!
Wait till he gets to page 105 and reads about how right it is for atheists to steal. Sucker!

If you are smart, then you have a mind that connects to truths.

If you are an idiot, then your mind connects to less than truths.

If you connect to the truth, then you truly know whether God truly exists.

If you are not a complete idiot, then you venture toward the truth, and you get there.
