You can smell your urine? I don't think I ever have (mine, not your's). I don't think I have any idea what normal smells like.

I don't know about odor, but one time when I ate a lot of beet greens I thought I might be bleeding from my kidneys:D

I was going to mention that one :). When you eat fresh beetroot (truly delicious) the colour goes straight through, which can give you a bit of a start if you're not expecting it.

Do hot dogs do, if they count as 'natural'? I guess there is one major spice used, sage or bay? that is probably the culprit.

But Artichokes do.

If you have eaten asparagus and not noticed a funny smell from your urine, then you are probably missing the gene required to detect the smell. Most people (everyone?) produces the smelly compounds (metabolites of asparagus), but only a fraction of the populace can actually smell them.

I tried that by eating LOTS of beetroot but I did not get red urine:(.

Some people say Sugar Puffs make their urine smell.

Pennicillin and its derivitives impart a distinctive odor (not "food", but they do get ingested).

Actualy, I've never eaten asparagus. Not out of some decision to avoid it. I've simply never seen anyone serve it.

Why does asparagus make urine smell? Are there any other vegetables that have a similar effect?

I wonder when the Woos will find that? Combine the methylene with riboflavin, "Take our little pill, see the green toxins flowing out of your system..."

We must RISE UP and cull the genetic inferiors from the human race! Kidding. Artichokes I don't know about, because I rarely eat them, but I eat garlic all the time and I don't notice any difference in smell. So far, it's just been asparagus.

The best way to describe Durian is...a well aged custard. It was creamy with a custard aftertaste and an absurdly strong odor. I kinda like it.

OT: The one thing I have always wanted to try, and never had the opportunity is Breadfruit. Never found it in Chicago, even at the exotic produce markets.

Well you need to get past the smell. The closest thing I can think of is that it smells like rotten papaya.

I've heard that. But I have managed some pretty potent Kimchee, so I imagine that I'll get past the smell.

Kill them all!

Oh wait--who are the inferiors, the ones with the gene or without :)?

Propofol, the anaesthetic induction agent which is currently in the news as it may have been involved in Michael Jackson's death, can turn your urine green.

This reminded me of a short essay by Benjamin Franklin. It's about farting, actually, but he refers to the odor of urine as well. It's hilarious, definitely worth reading. To the Royal Academy of Farting, c. 1781 (http://teachingamericanhistory.org/library/index.asp?document=470) The portion of interest here is:

Certain it is also that we have the Power of changing by slight Means the Smell of another Discharge, that of our Water. A few Stems of Asparagus eaten, shall give our Urine a disagreable Odour; and a Pill of Turpentine no bigger than a Pea, shall bestow on it the pleasing Smell of Violets. And why should it be thought more impossible in Nature, to find Means of making a Perfume of our Wind than of our Water? Benjamin Franklin (bold mine)

In my experience, asparagus makes urine smelly and beets make it red. 2 or 3 good sized beets, baked wrapped in foil like potatoes are delicious and will make you pee purple, brown, and orange for a day or two afterward, especially if you eat them right before bed. Try them before going to the doctor for a physical and see what happens on the urine test. :)
