Will someone direct me to some good sources on the history of religion?

Which religion? I am not sure if there are any good general histories, as the field is too diverse.

"An Incomplete Education" by Judy Jones and William Wilson has a chapter on religion. It gives a basic history and philosophy of the major religions. You can probably find it your local library.
