I wasn't sure whether to put this under Politics or Conspiracies: mods, if this isn't appropriate please feel free to move it. I originally found this little gem through this article at Salon (http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/feature/2009/07/31/antichrist/index.html?source=refresh), which in turn links to an article at WingNutDaily (http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=105527) and a YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raCRSjnT0Wc).

And if it's on YouTube, it must be accurate.

Basically, the idea is that Jesus said in Luke 10:18, "I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven" -- and, although the Gospels are written in Greek, he actually spoke in Aramaic, "the most ancient form of Hebrew". The video goes on to explain that the Hebrew word for lightning "is pronounced baw-rawk". The narrator has to make a sudden jump to a verse of Isaiah to get the right Hebrew word for "heights" (not "heaven"), which he says is pronounced "bam-maw".

And so, he concludes, the Hebrew for "lightning from the heights" -- "influenced by the poetry of Isaiah" -- would be pronounced "Baw-rawk U Bam-Maw". The columnist at Salon calls this "the political conspiracy theory equivalent of taking a phrase and running it back and forth among different languages in Babelfish until it becomes gibberish".

(I'd embed the video but I can't figure out how. {sulk sulk sulk})

Really? The anti-Christ would be stupid enough to run for office without being born in the US? :D

But wouldn't this mean that Nostradamus was wrong?

The guys who wrote the Left Behind series opined that Obama is not the anti-Christ, citing chapter and verse (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2008/08/14/left_behind_authors_obama_not.html).

Personally, I thought "The One" ad by the McCain campaign in 2008 was clever and funny and was not intended to be a dog-whistle to Christian Conservatives.

But then I would.

Obama can't be the anti-Christ. The anti-Christ would certainly be a white man.

No, he'd be a Roman, a Greek, or a Jew, which would be an olive tan man. :p

Shouldn't the anti-Christ actually, well, you know, deny Christ?

That would be what he would WANT you to think!

"but from my reading of scripture, [Obama] doesn't meet the criteria. There is no indication in the Bible that the antichrist will be an American."

:D

Nice ... case in point :p

Also, gotta love the irrational, nationalistic idea that no good ole murican could be rife with they call "evil".

Unfortunately it reminds me how, about a week ago, a stars-n-stripes mommy stabbed, decapitated, skinned, gutted and began eating her very own infant (in San Antonio). Very disturbing and sad.

No, closer to an olive green, particularly if he goes fishing during rough weather and is prone to sea sickness, seas a-boil or not. ;)

But she might also have really been a Mexican, ya see. :p (I'd need to check the story, it was rather gross.) It happened in San Antonio.

(Please note the sarcasm and irony in italics, if you please.) Expect she is, like a certain justice candidate, a Latina woman, and an American.

Oh my goodness. The Fail, it's full of stars.

Seriously, Skeptic is much more familiar with Hebrew being spoken (and read) than I am, but the guy in the video just gets so much wrong in pronunciation, not to mention jumping back and forth from Greek to Hebrew, that his fail on that alone shows how much he's reaching so far up his keister for confirmation as to be luidicrous (and a little gross). But he seems to miss the small point that the Jewish faith doesn't have a "Satan" character (http://www.beingjewish.com/basics/satan.html) like the Christian faith does.

This is why republicans should be listed under "Mental Retardation" !!
