From Yahoo and Reuters (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=573&ncid=757&e=8&u=/nm/20031211/od_nm/people_lynch_dc):So he [David Lynch] has joined a Washington real estate developer and a former magazine executive to try to raise $1 billion to bankroll a foundation meant to supply instructors in Transcendental Meditation to ease the planet's stress.
...
"Every time it's been tested it's reduced crime and violence. It's a real thing and it could be put in place this year and bring peace to Earth."It seems reasonable that meditation might reduce the crime and violence ... perpetrated by the meditators. If they're busy engaging in meditation, then they don't have as much time for crime and violence. But then again, the same claim could be made for activities such as solving crossword puzzles and bowling.

The notion that meditators will somehow reduce crime and violence perpatrated by others, however, seems to be a perverse fantasy. Hey, Dave, what would you think about holding the meditators legally responsible every time there's a new military conflict or terrorist incident? After all, if the meditators can prevent these unfortunate events by meditating, then the occurrence of the unfortunate events must mean that the meditators aren't doing their jobs.

I saw that article yesterday. My immediate thought was "David Lynch is an idiot."

I'm sticking with that. :)

Isn't that the same stupid logic used by Boulder Colorado (or was it Denver) in their recently passed initiative to "ease stress"?

Ah, I thought it had passed. But I am too lazy to look it up as well.

Upon reading this story, I felt that Lynch had waived his right to complain about government boondoggles. His plan is more wasteful, spending more dollars for less benefit, than other noted governmental debacles.

I heard him interviewed on the BBC on NPR a few weeks ago; he sounded like a complete looooooooon.
He seems to think that if he believes it, it must be true.

US$1 Billion for Transcendental Meditation...

That EXACTLY what we need! I cant think of any better investment of US$1,000,000,000!!!!

Now Transcendental Meditation is good for all sorts of things! Its... what is does... it ummm... can heal the world? YES! OBVIOUSLY! YOU HAVE TO BE BLIND NOT TO SEE WHAT A GENIOUS DAVID LYNCH IS!

In fact, if there's anything we MUST do, we must DOUBLE the cash! Hell, I'd be willing to pay higher taxes and sell a kidney if I just had more money to give this guy!

World peace: A prayer a day, and US$2,000,000,000 , and this country and the WHOLE WIDE EARTH will be bathed in so much love, that wars and violence and crime will be a relic of the past!

A genious if I ever did sawed one...

Oh ye cynics and skeptics. I, for one, would have been thrilled had this scholarship been available when I became a teacher of TM. It would have meant that I spent their money instead of my own. Ah well, I have only positive thoughts about my days in the TM movement. I timed it quite well, bowing out just as it started to get seriously whacky.

Bliss, my friends, only bliss.
