UK imposes Turks and Caicos rule

Britain has imposed direct rule on the Turks and Caicos Islands after an inquiry found evidence of government corruption and incompetence.

The Caribbean islands' administration has been suspended for up to two years and power has been transferred to the British-appointed governor.

...snip...

So USA folk - better get you house in order or you could be next - at least that would sort out your healthcare system! :)

Now for the serious part of the thread.

Has the UK done anything like this in recent history? And anyone know anything about this?

I dunno bout USA, but here in Canada, we are still affiliated with them. Can't see them wasting their money to enforce anything they might try to impose over here.

It wasn't us that did the 'trying', but it worked out rather well, as it happens.

It depends on who you ask. It didn't work out so well for the Argentinians. :D

Really rather well, on the whole. My brother was there.

I'd better get my offshore money out of Turks and Caicos quick.

No. Couldn't be in better hands. Holding offshore money that can then be funneled through the financial services industry of London is the standard template for British overseas territories. The problems this causes are generaly handwaved.

Last time such powers were used in canada that I know of would be 1990 in order to get the Goods and Services Tax through the senate.

Any other powers being used would require a larger blocking vote in the senate or perhaps a civil war.

Funny, they moved to the Horn of Africa and Mallaga Straits. That's not cricket!

We'd like to sing you a commonwealth song,
All-along, down-along, round-along, lee,
There isn't much of it, it won't take us long...

(Flanders and Swann's "Commonwealth Fair")

And they add:

That is a terrible song. We have to re-write it every morning. I was very worried about this song, they change their names, so many of these places, they keep dodging around all over the place and I rang up the commonwealth relations office - hadn't got any relations there, but rang up anyway - they were very nice, this is true - as sure as I'm riding this bicycle. No, I rang him up and said this is a very foolish question, I'm terribly sorry, but I'm writing this song, could you tell me exactly who is in the commonwealth, and this charming man said, well, as a matter of fact the file is in the other office.
