When I heard this podcast, I could have sworn I'd seen footage of the patch on Discovery Channel Canada's Daily Planet and other places. However, two research teams went to what Skeptoid is calling a non-existing patch, and has filed their report: (I'm not allowed to post a URL link, but just search Google News for "pacific garbage patch" and many articles, including the AP article, will come up.)
While most of the plastic is broken down into small pieces, it is still a hazard to wildlife.
I'm hoping that there will be a correction on Skeptoid, or at least a more nuanced view of this situation.
