32) Wendy Hudakoc (Vanished without a trace, no one ever charged, mother Shelley told the usual nonsense but this time Browne described a vague location of the body. Body never found, girl never heard of again, no one charged.)

I meant JREF board members, including yourself and myself. But specifically, Robert has a fair amount of clout in contacting families for SSB (before he had to take a break) and Kelly (http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?t=151578) (of Project Jason) since she may be contact with that family due from organization with missing children, and her dislike of psychic exploiting families. (She knew/knows some of the families from the Montel threads.)

I think if anyone would be successful in getting a positive response it maybe them.

She was right about one thing: She told my husband he would marry a girl with almond-shaped eyes. That's me.

Unfortunately, when I asked her if my husband, who was just a good friend at the time, and I would ever get together, she said no. In fact, she said something very adamant like, "No, NO! I know him! No, he's not the one for you." (We've been married now for 11 years.)

Of course, if I knew about Sylvia Browne Accuracy Irony (SBAI) the way I do know, which is that if she says something isn't going to happen, it probably is, and vice versa, I would have taken "No, NO! I know him! He's not the one for you!" as a definite and encouraging YES.

But odds are she has to be right about some things. Even someone who is really bad at guessing has to occasionally be right about something. :)

Yeah sooner or later she'll be right about one of these missing persons cases, then we will never hear the end of it. Since no believer will care how many times she was wrong.

But odds are she has to be right about some things. Even someone who is really bad at guessing has to occasionally be right about something. :)

She correctly predicted the death of Pope John Paul II in her annual predictions.

Of course, he was very old and very frail.

And, oh yeah, she incorrectly predicted his death for several years in a row in her annual predictions before he finally died.

In missing persons cases, I'm sure the only "hits" she's made are high probability things that most everyone assumes. (For example, that an abducted child missing for more than 6 months is probably dead. That murder victims are usually buried in an unmarked, shallow grave. That the cause of death has something to do with the head or chest. And so on.)

She relies on the fact that most of these cases will probably never be solved so she can't be proven wrong. Of course, the fact that they're never solved is, as QG points out, very strong evidence that she has not helped to solve them!

I have yet to find a single, documented case where Browne was substantially correct - or of any use to law enforcement - in any of her readings regarding missing persons or homicide cases.

I think she's stated in several of her books that she will live to be 92. If I am right in that than knowing her weasel ways she'll live to be 102. Argh! And I think she had also stated she would be available as a psychic until she dies.

I went to a local Fire department event last night with a phychic. She also was very vague. The funny thing was a woman in the audience was asking about a friend (Firefighter) who died in 911. The Phychic ask for any other names of others that worked in that fire company and the woman named my cousin, Terrance P Farrell. we said rescue company 4 was in Queens and the phychic kept saying Brooklyn. I just wanted to let everyone know That Terry never told anyone about his Bone Marrow Transplant To the Little girl in Las Vegas. Only his wife and maybe one of his brothers. Even His mother didn't find out until the funeral.

Sunnie, thanks so much for posting here. Terrance Farrell's story is one that still brings tears to my eyes when I read about it. What an incredible person. It's so nice to hear the personal perspectives of members of the families who have been affected by Sylvia Browne.

Joe, I don't know the answer to this. I am out of the loop now, so even if they have, I wouldn't know. I suspect those close to Sylvia believe her claims to have helped solve these kinds of cases. But I don't recall evidence of this ever having been provided and her followers just trust her enough to take her word on it. I have never heard anyone claim that Robert has refused to add something to his site, though.

By the way, I applaud you for using the correct metric to assess Sylvia's success percentage, QG.

Sometimes followers want to claim success because she got some detail right (often an irrelevant or extremely high probability detail such as "buried in a shallow grave", "near water" or "near a wooded area" or "someone named Mike is involved") even though she was completely wrong on other details and overall failed to solve the case or help in any way at all.

Yup, she's batting a perfect .000!

WILLIAMS: On December 15th, 2004, 24-year-old Shamika vanished from her home without a trace.
CARLA: The last time I talked to her, she said she was having lunch and she would talk to me later.
WILLIAMS: Carla never got a call from her daughter that day, but the next morning, her phone rang.
CARLA: My son called me and said that her roommate had dropped my grandchildren off at the neighbor house because Shamika was not at home.
JARVIS (His Sister Disappeared on December 16, 2004): Went over to the house, and her purse was still at the house with her ID there. And we both contacted the police because I knew at the time something was wrong.
WILLIAMS: Shamika's three children were brought over to their grandmother's house while family members continued to try to contact Shamika by cell phone. Two days later, Carla had a revelation.
CARLA: I was reading the Bible, and it hit me that my daughter was not coming back. I called my son, and I told him, `My baby's not coming back.'
WILLIAMS: And on New Year's Eve, a tip from a friend prompted Carla to call the police. Could a recently found unidentified body reported on the news be that of her daughter? Sources confirmed it was.
CARLA: They think she was raped. They found her body at a construction site at the airport. She was naked. Shamika was stabbed once. They have not found the killer or killers of Shamika. I'd like to ask Sylvia who and why they killed my baby? There was no reason for them to kill her.

Sylvia, before you answer, Carla, that night, your daughter put her children to bed, correct?
CARLA: Yes, she did.
WILLIAMS: And went to sleep in her closed, assumingly locked apartment.
CARLA: Correct. She was sleeping on the couch, and she was talking to a friend of hers on the phone, and someone beeped in, and she told her girlfriend she would call her later. And that's the last time anyone talked to her.
WILLIAMS: And no one even recognized that she was missing until when, the next morning?
CARLA: The next morning.
WILLIAMS: Because obviously the three--the girls got up, and no one was there.
JARVIS: Yeah, their mother gone.
CARLA: She had a friend staying with her. It was a--it was a lady, and she had three children, and my grandson came out the bedroom, and the lady asked her, `Where--where is Shamika?' And she went to the bedroom, my daughter was not there, and she started calling my daughter on the cell phone. There was no answer.
WILLIAMS: The body that was found was found when?
CARLA: December 31st, 2004, New Year's Eve.
WILLIAMS: And they pegged the time of death as when?
CARLA: Approximately the night she came up missing, the 15th.
WILLIAMS: The night she was...
Ms. BROWNE: Yeah. She knew this guy.
CARLA: Yes, she--she--apparently, she knew the person.
Ms. BROWNE: That's what I just said.
CARLA: Yeah.
Ms. BROWNE: I'm telling you, she knew him. This wasn't a stranger, and this is kind of a thing of--but she wanted to--this was not what I'd call a fling. She--he had more of a thing for her, do you see what I mean? She didn't want to have anything to do with him.
CARLA: OK.
Ms. BROWNE: But this is sort of that sort of corny, dramatic case of, `If I can't have you, no one will.' Do you see what I'm saying?
CARLA: Yeah.
WILLIAMS: Well, then, if this is somebody she went out with--or some--someone else must know who this person is.
Ms. BROWNE: Someone has got to know who this guy is.
WILLIAMS: And has seen this person.
Ms. BROWNE: He was short, stocky.
JARVIS: A lot of people that she socialized with or that she probably had dated, I--I didn't know any--we didn't know.
WILLIAMS: The fact that this was such a violent rape, and obviously, in this person--she was only stabbed person, but...
Ms. BROWNE: The thing that, I know it sounds violent, but she didn't even know what was going on. Thank God, she was--you know, she was dead right away. That's the thing. Not that I could tell you I'm pleased about, but I am, you know, that she didn't suffer.
CARLA: OK.

Yeah, you guys did an awesome job with this! How many psychics have had their claims researched to this degree and with documentation to prove how utterly they were wrong?! It's just amazing the work you've done here.

Me too. I've missed Robert's articles very much.

And just think that all of these are just a segment of all the readings she ever did. We have almost none of the readings done in private by phone or in person or by letter, none of what she might have said off camera, none of what she did on Montel prior to 2001, none of what she said on other shows, none of what she told police in private, nothing of any readings she might have done by radio...what damage she must have done that we have no way of even knowing about.

And we haven't IDed all the cases that are available to us! There are about 10 we were never able to crack.

Isn't this statistically significant of psi at work? C'mon, what are the odds that she would be absolutely no help whatsoever in so many cases? I think this is evidence that malevolent spirits are deceiving her. I mean, 70 or 80 failures, well, that's one thing. But 119? There must be other forces at work. Remember, 119 is 7 X 17 (both prime numbers). And 1+1+9=11, another prime number.

I think celebrity psychics prove themselves fakes simply by seeking celebrity status. I believe there may be a few folks who truly do get some sort of "sense" about things but the likes of Sylvia Brown isn't one of them.

I've known two people who claim psychic ability: a friend who, for some reason, was never able to give me any good advice; and an acquaintance who was a struggling actress in Hollywood that one day, very suddenly, shifted occupations to that of a psychic - up until then none of us ever witnessed any ability in that field at all. She made more money at it than acting, though. Oh, wait, it WAS acting. Never mind.

I have not read the entire thread, so if I'm repeating someone else I apologize for the duplication.

I watched a segment of the TV series "The Bureau" yesterday titled "Missing in Missouri" regarding Shawn Honbeck. It included interviews with his parents and the police and how they were led to the idiot that kidnapped him and Ben Ownby. I found it interesting but, unless they covered it when I stepped out of the room for a moment, there was no mention of Sylvia Browne. I was hoping the parents would mention Browne's outright lie and warn others to stay away from her. I'm sure there were legal reasons they could not mention her, but it would have been nice to hear her debunked straight from the victim's mouth!

Thanks to all those who worked so hard to compile this.

Lest the sheer amount of names numb you to their significance. This is not just a list of "misses". This is a list of "hits" -- brutally successful efforts at inflicting needless pain on another human being and then walking away without a speck of remorse or repercussion. I’ve worked on many murder/tragic death cases over the years (as a documentary director/writer) and I can tell you these families are in agony every day of their lives. They are desperate for any scrap of information, any scrap of hope. And into that unendurable swirl of suffering and guilt and confusion steps this woman.

And it isn't just the families of the murder/tragic death victims, but the families of the missing, too. They endure their own personal, very different brand of hell.

I am convinced now that someone like Browne must have no belief in an afterlife whatsoever to do this sort of thing. Much less a conscience.

Just my opinion.

The only sort of good thing I can say about this is that most of these are very cold cases where all leads started and ended years ago (many were three to five years after the fact, some ten or fifteen and two that I remember were three decades after the fact).

So there probably was really nothing more that could have been done anyway and they probably would have remained as unsolved as ever, with or without Mrs. Browne's "help". So at least she probably didn't mislead the investigations in most cases.

Also pretty disturbing are the predictions she gives in non murder/kidnap cases. There was a double rape case in which she had the nerve to tell the two victims not to look for the criminal any longer because he was now dead. :covereyes Way to help two women who came to you for answers on how to bring him to justice. :mad:

Maybe she thought she was helping them "move on" but it is actually finding someone like that and seeing him behind bars that actually helps you find relief. If he is dead, yes, that would probably help...but only if it is true. If it is not, they should keep looking for him.

Edit: Could someone do me a favor and check my work? I have a feeling I might have missed a few names while putting the list into alphabetical order. I'd really appreciate it.

How many times does this woman have to be catastrophically wrong? I think peoples faith in the woman is more fundamental than that, they have faith in psychic abilities. Before her even having to prove herself in any way to them, they believe she can do it, because they've already somehow come to the conclusion that it's at all possible. All she has to do to convince people is present herself appropriately.

Great list guys, I knew the woman had a bad track record, but I didn't know it was this bad. Great to see some emperical evidence to directly fight the woo.

He was beautiful. He was smart. So we just were very, very close. He was well-liked, well, you know, by everybody. He didn't have an enemy. He was just coming home from work. He was literally three blocks from the house, and he was shot, and they killed him. He died--and his car just slowly veered over to the right onto the grass and hit the utility pole and took down a sign, and that's where he--where he crashed, and he was dead before he crashed. He had $1,000 in his wallet, he had a cell phone, and all his tapes and--and his books in--in his car. That was still there, and his cell phone was still there, so it wasn't a robbery attempt. It just breaks our hearts that we don't know if--if it was someone that hated him, or--or just a drive-by shooting. We live in a development--we live in a beautiful development with--he was shot right in front of a grammar school. The police have little to go on because it was on Thanksgiving morning in Charles County. Christopher, for 2004, is the only unsolved murder as of today.

It's a work in progress. The list will be amended and the numbers will be changing as more references come in. There maybe some overlap and some names removed if no references can be found that Browne spoke to the families.

What does this say about Montell Williams? He got his own TV show because at one point in his life he was someone you could admire. What happened? How could he have fallen so far that he is selling dubious juicers with Sylvia?

I think this would make a good thread. I don't enouph about Montell Williams to believe I should start the thread -- but maybe someone else here feels they know enough.

QG and Eeney, thanks as always. Randi has emailed me a copy of your article, so your work has been Noticed!

I have yet to hear of anyone claiming I have refused topublish their positive account of Browne.

Frankly, in all the time since the site first opened, I have only heard fromTWO people who said that Browne had given them an accurate or helpful reading.

The first was a woman who wrote that Browne had given her an incredibly accurate phone reading. She eventually sent me a recording of the "reading" which showed that most of her memories of the reading were incorrect, and that cold reading accounted for everything.

The second was a woman who sent me an obscenity-laced email in which she claimed that Browne had helped to find the woman's missing father.

When I asked if she had any evidenlce of this - a newspaper article about her father being found, a recording of the reading - anything, her correspondence got more and more angry and her language more foul. I finally told her that I would publish her original email or, if she preferred, she could rewrite it. I told her that if I published it as is, it would look like I was trying to make Browne's supporters look bad. she agreed, and said she would like to rewrite it. I never heard from her again, in spite of my writing to her several times.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but it is funny how I've always had the exact same experience.

People who actually defend Browne to me (and psychic detectives and psychics in general) almost never do it by presenting evidence to the contrary. Even something they think is evidence to the contrary.

They almost never say something like "Well, I saw her on TV and she told someone something so accurate he fell to his knees!" or "She told my mother something very accurate and specific about my late grandmother that she'd never be able to know otherwise." (Not that this would be verifiable and credible evidence, of course.)

What do they say? How do you know, how is it any of your affair, what right do you have, "BUT SHE HELPS PEOPLE!", she would never lie, the psychics help them get over the loss, the psychics give them hope, who are you to take away their hope, "My aunt once saw a psychic and she was really good!", maybe the police lie when they say they don't use psychics because they are afraid of what would happen if they admitted to it, I'm an idiot, I'm a close minded party pooper, I'm negative, I'm a naysayer, I just don't understand, I need to get a life.

Oddly, sometimes people who aren't even fans of Sylvia Browne, John Edward or John of God or anyone else somehow feel the need to chime in and add their two cents and defend them. And, ironically, their unasked for two cents are usually that you and I shouldn't have our "unasked for" two cents.

And their defense is never a rebuttal. It's supposition, speculation, maybes and perhaps, ad hominem, appeal to ignorance, explanations of why there is no evidence, misapplied burden of proof and irrelevant facts.

Which is usually exactly what they accuse you of!
