Just an antidote to the usual sentiment that Islam is a relgion of hatred, etc.

Well gee that ought to put a stop to them. How do you punish a successful suicide bomber? I mean there has to be an or else to it all for it to work. Do you get 15 hookers instead of 72 virgins?

It's patently ignorant to tar all of Islam as a religion of hatred. Unfortunately, the more moderate interpretations have been overshadowed by the psychotic fringe...
It's heartening to hear of more moderate muslims reclaiming their religion from the Wahhabist animals.

well i suppose the "or else" has to do with refuting the notion that islam condones terrorist bombings therefor undermining the belief that some of these murderers have that they are doing some gods work...These are the senior clerics from the largest islamic nation in the world....you will probably learn more from listening to what they have to say than from some of the ranting bigots that post here.

It's a given that not all people of any group share the same moronic ideas held by a few in the group. Hell not all white american males believe that Islam as a whole supports suicide bombing as a means to get a point across. But clerics have condemned it before and it has no effect really.
I meant no insult towards Islam, in fact, if anything it does show an attempt. I'm just a firm believer that people tend to respond differently when they have consequences to their actions that they don't like.

I absolutely agree, maybe you could give me a hand with the bigots that constantly post the same boring "all muslims are...." stuff... They even like to think of themselves as skeptics, something that causes me endless mirth.

Is there a distinction between a religious decree and a fatwa?

... but regular bombing is still OK. Highly encouraged, in many cases.

No. A fatwa is a Muslim religious decree.

I'll believe it when the suicide bombings stop.

Well, that might not be a bad deal... throw in a deathtime supply and cold beer and you'll see Texans lining up to join...
(Sorrry, couldn't resist.)
Seriously, one of the main points that help suicide bombers is community support of their "heroic actions". If that is taken, much of it might stop.
Indeed, this is one reason why it's so hard to root out in the palestinian society: from age 0, they are indoctrinated to "follow the steps of the martyrs".
Of course the indoctrinators decline to do the honors themselves, but hey, the kids (most suicide bombers are <25) are expendable and don't seem to notice the hypocracy.

Bigot!!! Didn’t you know that the fanatical Muslims are the fringe minority? How dare you imply that they have “community support”!!

Well, it's the American way. No pun intended.

sigh....you really don't have a clue do you. please tell me of one person you think believes that suicide bombers don't have the support of a lot, very probably a strong majority of palestinians..... Please tell me of one person who has called someone a bigot for claiming this..... They have the majority support of some communities, just as the tank and bulldozer drivers and jet pilots have the support of thier communities... your homework for tonight is to do a bit of reading on what bigot means and then come back and apply it correctly in a sentence...
If you have to be a "fanatic" to support the killing of people with bombs then I think the majority of the worlds population could be branded fanatics....

They have the majority support of some communities, just as the tank and bulldozer drivers and jet pilots have the support of thier communities...
So I guess there's no difference between OBL and Bush, too--after all, they both have the "support of their communities", and it's only a difference in means...
Actually, there are three differences here: in the means, in the type of support, and in the ends.
First, with the means: there is a significant moral difference between trying to "hit" a terrorist in hiding with a plane and trying to kill as many of the hated jews, preferably children, with a suicide bomber.
Also, the degree of support is different: israelies don't dance in the streets and give candy to children every time a palestinian is killed, while the palestinians do so every time a jew is killed.
Most important, however, is the difference in the ends. The palestinian goal is, quite openly, israel's destruction and throwing the jews into the sea. OBL's goal is a totally muslim world.
This is a bit different than the israeli goal (survival) or Bush's goal (making sure 9/11 doesn't happen again and spreading democracy).
It isn't really a matter of "two points of view" or "differing community support", any more than a murderer and his victim are merely "disagreeing" about whether the victim should live or die.
It's a matter of a relentless, murderous type of Islam whose goal is "death to the infidels" and "throw the jews into the sea", on the one hand, against those who would not agree to that, on the other.

Fine "skeptic" whatever plot you want for your hollywood view of life is fine by me..... I just wonder what you make of the lunatic fringe of zionism that wants genocide of the Palestinians...why are you not applying this view to all Israelis? You are happy to attribute the views of the loonie extreme to all Palestinians, where is the consistancy?

As the article refers to only two bombings (Bali 2002 and Jakarta this year IIRC) , it might be fair to say that they've never really got going in the same way as other parts of the world. What I find interesting is that the Indonesian clerics have no problem issuing these statements despite the fact that the Saudis have yet to do so. I have always understood that despite its size, Indonesia has been the follower rather than the leader in terms of Islamic interpretation. This is a welcome change to that situation, the less influence the Wahabbists have the better.
