So I try to put aside a few bucks now and again to keep myself educated on current science. Mostly these days it's spent on comp-sci/security books due to the nature of my job. But I'm wanting to round things out a bit.

So what mainstream science-oriented periodicals out there would you fellow JREFers recommend for the scientifically literate layperson?

I'm talking along the lines of 'Scientific American' or 'Skeptical Inquirer'.

I like 'Scientific American' and 'National Geographic' very much. 'Popular Science' used to be a good mag., but for several years now the articles have been fluffy filler between the auto and tech gadget ads.

You should try a library. I live in a small, rural town and the library does not subscribe to many magazines; but the number on my library card is the password to OnLine access to many publications through the region's library system.

I've subscribed to SciAm for at least 20 years. Still enjoy reading it.
