I am following the Vitamin D vs. H1N1 news that are out there. It feels like it is the next pseudo science... I cannot find any study out there that proves Vitamin D is effective against Swine Flu.

It started with Dr. John Cannell (president of the vitamindcouncil dot org) promoting this claim and there are already a some links in the internet about it. Like here:

[ sorry... I cant post links...I am too new...someone better than me please look in twitter and post some from there ]

Dr. Cannell also claims in a YouTube video that if you take Vitamin D you don’t get sick any more.

[ links...argg... please search in youtube for a video of Dr. Cannell talking about Vitamin D ]

In his website [ link to his website] he claims that you can cure cancer, autism, depression, etc with vitamin D. He also has links with referals to commercial sites that sell Vitamin D products.

If you search in twitter for Vitamin D H1N1…you can see how fast it is growing and it worries me that some of the people is suggesting using Vitamin D instead of “Big Pharma” vaccination.

Now Dr. Oz is suggesting to take Vitamin D and not taking sugar to prevent H1N1…and he even says that he will not take the vaccine.

[ another link myfoxny dot com has a video of dr Oz talking about Vitamin D there...look for it in google please ]

What about?
* Wash your hands frequently
* Cover nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze
* Don't touch your eyes, nose and mouth
* Avoid contact with sick people
* If you have flu symptoms, stay at home...please.

I am concerned..should I not worry?...please say I am wrong.
Thanks,

PS: Can't post links yet...sorry...can someone PM me and I ll give some links?

Welcome to the forum yedref. I wish I had some good info to share about Vitamin D but I don't, just thought I'd take this opportunity to say that Dr. Oz is a douche for announcing that he is not taking the vaccine.

I feel better now.

Thanks!...he actually says that he doesn't know if he will take the H1N1 Vaccine. In my battle against the links I sent an older version.

Getting enough vitamin will make you overall healthier and less likely to succumb to a disease, so in that regard its only 99% nonsense.
If vitamin cured disease in any way Big Pharma would have been selling it with that claim decades ago, instead they sell it as a food supplement because that won't get them sued for false claims.

... In his website [ link to his website] he claims that you can cure cancer, autism, depression, etc with vitamin D. ...I don't know if you'll find much on vitamin D; but go to www.quackwatch.org and browse around. One of the hallmarks of quackery is grandiose claims for "curing" whatever ails you. There is no cure for autism, some cancers can be cured; but vit. D is not an antitumor drug. Treating depression with vit. D, if it is that simple- why are so many people ill. You have delved deep into the woo.

You could also google the American Dietetic Association and see if they have a fact-sheet on the vitamin.

What is neither reasonable nor supported is to take supratherapeutic amounts of vitamin D as a replacement for either the vaccine or, if you should get flu, oseltamivir.
Vitamin D is not ” the single most powerful nutrient in the known universe for preventing influenza, ” despite the Natural News hysterics. Yet another alternative mountain made from a scientific molehill.

It's an hypothesis based on the winter cycle of influenza outbreaks. It fails to explain influenza in the tropics and, evidence that a deficiency of vitamin D interferes with the immune system is not evidence extra vitamin D would enhance the immune response.

The hypothesis remains to be tested. Don't hold your breath.
