"Seven former CIA directors have asked President Obama to use his authority to reverse Attorney General Eric Holder's decision (http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=8398902)to re-open the criminal investigation into the CIA's post 9/11 interrogations (http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=8403694)of suspected terrorists.

Over-ruling an attorney general on a criminal investigation would be an extraordinary move, but the former directors contend Holder's investigation will ultimately "help Al Qaeda elude U.S. intelligence and plan future operations."

Wow, a bunch of former CIA directors scurrying for darkness, like roaches? You don't say. This should be easy to translate:

"Please don't let everyone know that we're a bunch of Torquemadas."

Disgusting.

Perhaps it'd be best if the US simply disbanded the CIA and started anew.

Not that that would ever happen.

Ever thought there might be, uh, another reason why they're asking this?

Glenn Greenwald weighs in:
CIA Directors conclude CIA shouldn't be investigated for murder

In a truly shocking development being treated as major news (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/19/world/19intel.html?src=twt&twt=nytimes), seven former CIA Directors -- including all three who served under George W. Bush -- jointly concluded that the CIA should not be criminally investigated for torture deaths, and they have written a letter to President Obama (http://abcnews.go.com/images/Politics/Letter%20to%20President%20Obama%20from%20Former%20 DCIs%20and%20DCIAs.pdf) (.pdf) expressing that view. Do leaders of organizations in general ever believe that their organizations and its members should be criminally investigated and possibly prosecuted for acts carried out on behalf of that organization, and do CIA Directors specifically ever believe that about the CIA? Has a CIA Director ever advocated that CIA agents be criminally investigated for illegal intelligence activities?

Edited to comply with Rule 4

Is there some reason you felt compelled to post the entirety of Greenwald's column in violation of Rule 4?

Legally I suspect Greenwald is right. Politically, he's dead wrong, and with regard to national security I suspect he could be deadly wrong.

applecorpred,

Exactly.

Peephole,

Disgusting.

Not a chance in hell. If any politician attempted to put in motion an effort to disband the CIA, they'd probably end up getting assassinated. Whether it be "a heart-attack", "suicide", or an assassination that would be blamed on another group.

That is very paranoid thinking on your part.
