Not quite sure if this is the correct forum but here goes. Showed up on the edge of my door frame yesterday. Any ideas? Looks like an insect cocoon or egg sac but darned if I know what type. Could be a fungus of some sort too I suppose. For refererence I think the brick is about 3 inches high.

I'd just dip it in some salsa and try it that way.

It looks very like an emperor gum moth cocoon.

If that's your door frame, you may have other issues to be concerned with.

I looked them up and they're shown and described as brown so I'm not sure that's right.

How so?

You're right. I had forgotten that.
But it is certainly a moth cocoon. Nurture it and see what pops out.
Also protect it from predators: some little beasties drill through the casing and suck out the yummy contents.
And then you will never know.

It's obviously an alien pod. It is slowly absorbing all your memories, and will gradually insert itself psychically into your brain, until 'you' have ceased to exist, and it has taken over entirely.
Or its a moth cocoon.
But given that the former possibility has far higher potential risk than the latter, I'd suggest burning it to a cinder (just to be safe). And you haven't forgotten your tin foil hat, have you?

I'm kind of torn on that. I'd like to know what it is. At the same time if something comes along and eats it, well that's nature, red in tooth and claw, and I'm not inclined to interfere.

But the pods are our friends. Come, join us in peaceful podular harmony. :P

No no no!!! Burning it is almost certainly the necessary step to activate the alien pod. It will spread throughout the populace and soon all of humanity will be turned into alien zombies.
