ETA: wow the forum ate my opinion. political cartoons. this one struck me as odd since it isn't Islamism responsible for the murder 2996 people on 9/11. it was islam extremists that did. I think the artist just failed at trying to communicate this message

I think the author intends a subtle difference between "Islam" and "Islamism." As in, nationalist Islamic groups.
I also think it was too subtle of a difference. The al-Qaeda swine are not representative of Islam at all. "Fanatical Islamic terrorists" would be better, but wouldn't scan as well. Such is art.

Islamism is used as a term for radical violent jihadist Islam. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamism)
And Cox and Forkum did a good job with that comic. It cuts through all the apologetic B.S.

As far as I know, the term Islamism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamism) is used to describe various political movements which promote a religion based political structure. Mainly the Muslim Brotherhood and its offshoots, including Al Quaeda. The distinction (made in the cartoon) between Islamism and the religion (Islam) is not subtle IMO.

Your link describes some definitions of Islamism that are quite radical, and others that are really nothing to be concerned about. I think there's enough scatter in the terminology that the cartoon could be taken the wrong way.
Just nitpicking over language, not really on-topic.

Had the cartoon used "Islamist" or "Salafist", I might be happier with it.

Islamism is a real movement, and Islamist is a real title. It is used by Al-Jazeera and other Muslim media sources.
But yes, Westerners do often confuse radical extremist Jihadists with your average every day Muslim.

Uh...I thought this was the 9/11 conspiracy thread?
Shouldn't it read Bush+Thermite=2,996 dead?

I agree that had the cartoon been clearer, it speaks well to those who perhaps have forgotten. My issue is that people like myself, who perhaps are not as up to date on the latest terminology, could easily confuse (as I did) the term Islamism as meaning all of Islam.

Islamism and Islamic extremism go hand in hand. Indeed, the current Islamic extremism has its political roots in Islamism. (Undesired Walrus explains it a lot better than I do. )
Islam and Islamic extremism? Not necessarily so.

A billion Chinese don't seem to have suffered from it. So, no, not the whole planet.
How has India suffered due to 9-11? How has Argentina suffered, due to 9-11?
Hyperbole in the coffee this morning? ;)
