So I tried to instal Medal Of Honour, and when I run it, it tells me that I have a debugger running that needs to be shut down. After some trawling of various fora, I find that deleting/renaming a file, amdfix.sys, in the winnt/system32 directory will fix it. I tried. It worked.

So, my question. What is this file? I do use an Athlon XP cpu; does this file compensate for some processor bug, perhaps?

I looked at the file in notepad, but, being a binary file, it makes little sense. There is enough plain text in it that someone with a little win32 programming knowledge may be able to work it out.

Any windoze user should have this file, but if there are any other folks who reckon they could work it out, I can PM/email it.

Cheers,
Rat.

AMDFIX.sys is installed by certain ULEAD brand products to fix a compatibility problem with cetain AMD processors. It's been known to cause issues with other programs.

That was a quick response. Cheers.

I guess that'll teach me to install dodgy trial versions of software.

Cheers,
Rat.

You can Google for file names with the extension. It's quite useful to do this, you will also get an idea from the search results of any problems encountered by others having these things installed and running.

I've solved many problems with unknown files in this way.

What kind of idiots require you to disable the debugger... it's getting more and more annoying... don't they understand that if someone wants to crack the program no such stupid "protection" will deter him...

I always crack programs to remove such warnings because I don't really want to disable Softice and reboot everytime or having to hide it. It's very disturbing when I have payed for the original software. Idiots. Bloody idiots.
