View Full Version : Thinking about selling trasure detectors . . . sorry, guys.

Okay, seriously. I'm very good at designing for the web, have rudimentary putting-things-together skills, and quite a good writer of copy.

I am going to sell treasure detectors.

I can't help it - it's like they want to throw their money away. Why not to me? I'll do good things with it. I won't blow it on bubble gum and comic books. It would be so simple . . . even if I only sold one every two months, that's $3600 in extra income per year, minus $300 in parts, $300 in hosting, and a few hours of work.

Seriously, JREFers, please tell me why I shouldn't. The draw is very very great here; I am succumbing to the desire to rip off people, becoming one of them. Help!

$300 in hosting, and a few hours of work.

No!

You can get ample features and service for under 100 a year! :)

I didn't know treasure detectors were so expensive! 600 profit from each sale? Wow.

How the heck do you get hooked up with something like that? Is it one of those "Internet Storefronts in a Box" things you see on T.V.?

Please do it! It's about time that woo-woos don't get ripped only by fellow woo-woos. Why can't a skeptic guy capitalize on people's uncontrollable urge to seperate from their money ? :D

Good (deity), no! I'd probably get 1and1 to do the hosting, have a CS friend of mine do the back end, do the design and marketing myself, and produce the units solo. I mean, I just saw some that were like a TI basic calculator taped to a box selling for $600; I'd like to think I can get the verisimilitude going better than that.

I should probably see if this is illegal, though. Don't want to go to jail.

I also just saw that the thread title has the word "Trasure" in it. Good work, LFTKBS.

Please, someone tell my why I shouldn't do this. Part of me knows it's wrong and the other part just doesn't give a damn.

If you know that the product doesn't work as cliamed then it probably is illegal.

Perhaps a few disclaimers may be needed.

But he is not going to tell people that he knows it doesn't work! Do homeopaths run around telling people homeopathy does not work ? I'm sure many of them know the truth, they just choose not to say so ;)

You will feel guilty for promoting woo-wooism. The dollars you earn may compensate you for the guilt you feel. The amount of dollars you need to make to consider this worthwhile depends on your character.

How about a device that amplifies ones natural abilities to find treasure ? Results Guaranteed ! (I call it a shovel)

LK,

I must admit .. a moral part of me says this is WRONG..

Another part says surely the money is better off in your responsible hands than those of the idiot who sent it to you (he’s just gunna blow it somewhere else anyway)…

I’ll write a couple of testimonials when you set it up (for a fee of course…lol)

BTW I noticed the “Trasure” .. thought it was an apt name for a “treasure detector”

I can always knock up a couple of working models for you, for the website pics and "peer-reviewed demonstrations"...

Move over, Dennis Lee! :D :D :D

You shouldn't do this because we may not know where you live, but we do have your map reference. I am prepared to bet there cannot be more than one talking paper cup in the area.
When we find you we will fill you with boiling oil, then cut you into small pieces and put you on a bonfire. On each anniversary we will burn you again in effigy and your initials cursed for all eternity.
Will that do for a reason?
:a2:
Failing that, I appeal to your better instincts.

This is an internet forum after all. I suspect LFTKBS is, in reality, just another bored Welsh housewife. :)

Trashure? Is that like, really crummy treasure? Or is it an indication of the quality of your detectors? :D

"Responsible hands", indeed.

Sometimes the posters here disappoint me. This is one of those times.

Actually, at first I read the thread as "trash detectors."

Sell them as 'Gullibility Detectors' with a clear conscience. Or just plain 'Money Detectors'. If they worked for you, they can work for their new owner!

Because eventually...somewhere along the line, you're gonna embarrass or piss off the wrong guy.

And maybe you'll have your ass covered with all the right disclaimers and legal docs, and unverifiable claims, and maybe you won't....

But even if you don't get convicted, or adjudicated against in a civil suit...

Do you really want to deal with the legal hassles of a Fraud charge, or a civil charge?

A lot of these people eventually have to move, and change phones numbers, declare bankrutcy to avoid collections and judgements...

Probably not worth it.

I think you missed some stuff here Grommit…

Humour based on peoples gullibility, motivated by intelligence, fuelled by thankfulness, justified with justifiable arrogance.

We were JOKING !!!!

But why defend an idiot who is going to buy a “treasure detector” anyway !

With enough disclaimers, I don't have too much trouble with it.

So are you going through with it or is this all a bunch of "that stuff that walks"?

LFTKBS
22nd December 2003, 07:27 PM
Well, I talked it over with the almost-missus the other night; she said "you said the same thing about the fake pheremone-enhancing cream, remmember? You'll never, ever do it, because you'll feel bad and guilty about it, and you said on multiple occasions 'I hate those people like poison.'"

So I'm pretty sure it's not happening. I don't want to perpetuate the clearly immoral (and immortal) line of con artists in this country.

Thanks to everyone for helping me resist the dark side. :)

P.S. I don't live in Tempe anymore, but I'm close.

Well, it's not always easy to do the right thing the first time. Don't despair though, you have been thinking about it and this is the first step. I'm sure you will eventually do it. :D
