Spawned by the debate about the Time cover showing a group of 3 US soldiers as their "Person of the year 2003", who do you think has had the most positive effect on the world this year? Could be a politician, scientist, sportsman whatever, maybe we should have categories?

Come to think of it, 2003 hasn't been too glorious for anyone.... except the English Rugby team of course... so my vote goes to Martin Johnson.

The person of the year definitely goes to Jolly old Santa Claus.

For 100s of years, Santa Claus has been altruistically delivering presents to good little children.

Sure, your privacy means nothing to Santa Claus (he knows when you're asleep, he knows when you're awake), but aside from the 1989-ish paranoia, good guy all around. He might be a major player in the promotion of child labor without pay, but he sure does look funny with that milk mustache. Given that Santa couldnt care less about his reindeer which might put him in the wrong place in the eyes of PETA, his slovenly appearence and poor regard for his own enough health probably make his wife, Mrs. Claus, cry at night...

You know, just forget it...

I hate abstract awards. "US soldiers" ain't a person. It's like when the Nobel Prize gone to Doctors Without Borders. Those guys all took it like a bunch of jerks, when only one of them should have got it.

My vote is Linus Torvalds since he just released Linux 2.6. Or perhaps him, Morton, et al sorta like the soldiers were done.

Good idea, I think that maybe some kind of techie/ scientist/ medico is probably the most deserving in terms of positive global impact.
