This may be a bit OT, but can someone please recommend a good scholarly book (or books, or journal articles) on rumors and and/or conspiracy theories? I’m doing some research on anti-German rumors during WWI (many of which were conspiracy-theories) and need to brush up on any theories of how rumors are created and spread. My degree is in history and I am not familiar with current research into psychology (or would that be sociology?).
Thanks,

And yes, it would be in the realm of sociology. Psychology is experimental while sociology is mostly data collection. AFAIK, there are no experimental methodologies that investigate conspiracy theories.

Thank you, those are interesting. I've printed them out to read...
I think the footnotes should include some good places to start for any theorizing about rumors...
thanks UlR!

I read this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Voodoo-Histories-Conspiracy-Shaping-History/dp/0224074709) a couple of months back. I found it interesting but don't remember any German WW1 stuff
